Keeping things going

Friday, June 17, 2016

Quintus, our sick dog, had a relapse this week. When a dog refuses bacon, there's a real problem. Vet changed his meds and kept him overnight to push fluids into him. We still do not have a firm diagnosis for what's causing his fever. This was Tuesday, the same day a small -- 150 acre -- wildfire broke out 30 miles from us.

Wednesday we went grocery shopping, picked up the dog and came home to find that the fire had spread to 700 acres and growing. By bedtime it was 2000 acres and 12 miles away. We stayed up until 2 a.m. gathering up important papers, checking over our Go Bags, and loading the necessities in the trucks. Laptop computers and flash drives? Cell phones fully charged? Phone chargers? A few changes of clothes? Check. Dog food, cat food, medications, sleeping bags. Guns in one truck, ammo in the other. What have we forgotten? Can't think! Too tired.

It's almost impossible to get information from local authorities; the fairgrounds which is set up to take livestock had no phone number listed, so we can't find out if we can start ferrying our goats down there before we're hit with a mandatory evacuation. And every time the wind shifts, conditions change.

With all the chaos, it's hard to focus on eating right. I don't even want to start cooking, because I may have to abandon the meal half-cooked, but if I don't cook and we don't evacuate, we'll have nothing ready for dinner. So I guess I'd better start dinner and hope we're here to eat it. This is not fun!

So hard to know what to do but seems you managed to get all the necessities ready. Feel so sorry for all those struck by the fires this summer.
