RA Will Not Define Me

Saturday, June 11, 2016

Where to start? It has been 6 years ago since I lost 62 pounds with the help of Sparkpeople. I was nearing a very healthy weight and felt better than I have my whole life. Life happened. I started back to work after 18 years of being a stay at home mom and apparently didn't think taking care of myself should be a priority. Fast forward 6 years and I have gained all of the weight plus back.

So, what brings me back to Sparkpeople, the root of my initial success? I've had to learn a lot about my body and what it needs very quickly. I was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid disease. It is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks the joints and causes damage. It can also attack the organs of the body. My Vectra test results indicated that I have an aggressive form of the disease. That in itself was enough to make me break down in tears and know that I have to do something.

In the last year and a half, I had become a hiker, hiking 3-9 miles on rugged terrain. It had become a passion and something I craved doing. It kept me in shape despite the weight. That has all come to a halt due to the disease. I refuse to back down an let my body take control and kill my dreams and passions. I have only one choice; I must fight back. Rheumatoid disease is incurable and I can choice to sit back and let it define me or I can fight and live life to the best of my capability. I am starting by working on the healthiest body that I can achieve given the circumstances.

I am starting to see results already. It is a mindset that I will not bow down to a disease. The Spark community helps me not feel alone in my journey. There are so many others that are dealing with similar issues and just want their health back. What a great place to support, encourage and hold each other up through the good days and the bad.

Keep on fighting! I am fighting to get my health in the best possible place right now too. It is worth it! We can reduce inflammation with good food and moderate our exercise until we lose weight, taking pressure off the joints a bit. Never give up! emoticon emoticon

Good attitude. With your doctor's permission, you may not have to give up hiking. Maybe not such rugged trails, but many parks have hiking trails. God bless you in your journey to a healthier you, in spite of what gets thrown at you.
