For the 31st round of the Biggest Loser Challenge on SparkPeople, I was given my first choice of teams, the "Spicy Sparkologists". This team uses the scientific method as the theme for their team which competes with other teams in the overall challenge. The Spicy Sparkologists team members are expected to design their own weight loss experiment and the team supports you in that endeavor. To briefly summarize my experiment:

Experiment Aim:
Lose 1.5 - 2 lbs. per week.
Lose 12 - 16 lbs. in 8 weeks.
Increase mobility, which includes endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. This will make it easier to climb stairs, get into and out of the car, and make me less dependent on my walking cane.

Experiment Method:
Participate in SparkPeople BLC31 challenge.
Complete 11 minutes of seated aerobic exercise, five days per week.
Complete 10 minutes of stretching exercise, five days per week.
Exercise 1st thing in the morning, before TV or computer is turned on.
Make a weekly menu plan and follow it.
Eat 3 meals and 3 snacks each day, so that I'm eating something every few hours.
Stay within a calorie range of 1700-1800 calories per day.
Weigh and measure food. Don't guess how much I am eating.
Track the calories of every bite of food on SparkPeople.
Stay engaged in fun activities like art projects and online classes.
Write 250 words in private online journal every day.
Read one chapter per week of the book "Grit, The Power of Passion and Perseverance" by Angela Duckworth.

I also have an experimental hypotheses and data collection sheet set up on a weebly website that can be found at this link.

I like the idea of thinking of my weight loss journey as a personal experiment. Make a plan, implement the plan, document the results, adjust the plan......

I love the idea of using the scientific method (even if it needs to be simplified somewhat and not completely scientifically correct in the methodology) and thinking of this as an experiment to find what works best. I am a number cruncher and love data, so this is a great! Your Weebly lab is fantastic both in aesthetics and information. Good luck and enjoy your time as a Spicy Sparkologist!

I checked out your lab on weebly today. You are amazing. You have the makings of a seriously awesome transformation there. Inside and out. My favorite part was your 100% commitment. I cannot wait to see what transpires. My guess is far more than you even suspect.
