Trim down & tone up? Get a dog

Saturday, May 21, 2016

We have just adopted Cora, who is a Samoyed mix and she is a real sweetheart. Even though I was a walker before we adopted her I am walking a lot more with her. We start our day with about a mile walk in the early morning all by ourselves. I'm still working out at the gym, taking yoga, doing my strength training but my average steps/day have gone from the 15,000 - 16,000 range to 19,000 - 21,000/day.

A couple of things I've noticed: First, I was more tired than usual just from upping the steps. Second - my hips have slimmed down. Weight is right where I want it to be, but my hips and thighs are more toned.
Third - my stomach is flatter! Guess I'm using different muscles walking her?

This is a whole new experience with Cora and it has enriched our lives. Figured she would make a difference and never expected she would have fitness benefits along with everything else.

If you have a dog, how does that help you meet your fitness goals?

Congrats on your adoption of Cora, she is beautiful. I had a Spitz named Mitzie back in the 60-70s. Now I walk with neighbors that have dogs (lab & Bull Mastiff). We walk the dogs first then people walk afterward.

Hello Martha and Cora! Congrats on the new addition to your family. I have 2 dogs and walk them every day. It makes me walk faster because they love to just go and go. Yesterday I walked them a little farther than usual and they were wiped out but very happy to explore new parts of the neighborhood. I love my dogs and they love me. Happy Friday and happy walking! emoticon

Hooray (and how wonderful to have a new addition to your family!

Yes to all the positive results you've noted from walking - particularly at a prescribed pace (not just strolling along). It's my main form of exercise and I've been nothing but amazed by how it's transformed my body, both externally and internally.

Great job. I have a dog. I can't walk her with a leash any more due to a back injury. But, we go hiking on this Leash free path. She loves it cause she can run and run. I love it Because I can walk with her and it is pretty.
