We all need to remember to be S.M.A.R.T.

Monday, May 16, 2016

I read a blog today by AUTIEJ that talked about using S.M.A.R.T. goals, Significant, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Tenacious (instead of Time) to help her keep on track. She talked about how Time was not a good measure for weight loss, because most of us when we first came to Spark People would set very unrealistic goals for how much time we thought it would take to lose so many pounds. Very often it would set us up for feelings of failure when we did not reach that goal in the timeframe we expected to, and for many that would be the day that they gave into those cravings and weight started to climb again.

Life is great at throwing curve balls at our weight loss attempts, and instead of feeling frustrated at what we did not lose we should instead look at how much we did lose as our accomplishment. As so many have said, we did not gain weight overnight, and we won't lose it overnight... but for each 0.01 pound we lose it counts as a loss over time. Yes, there will be days when the scale goes in the wrong direction, but I can make those temporary stalls on the way to a slimmer me. So let's all stop putting ourselves down because we did not reach a time goal, and instead be tenacious and keep watching those small 0.01 pounds start adding up to huge losses.

Just what I needed to remind me of the goal I set for myself and to keep plodding along, even if I only loose 0.01 of a pound, it's still lost weight that will add up in the long run. So, I am going to go back to tracking my foods daily, and talking myself into not buying any more large bags of chips... Ohhh why did they have to come up with sour cream bacon chips... lol!!

    I didn't read Sutie's blog but I totally agree of banning time limits for goals. Thankfully I never had one during my journey. I don't believe in the pressures of time limits, it defeats tif;

    Great blog. I echo your thoughts. I would like to come back to this just as a reminder.
