We have a young black orphaned squirrel that was rescued from an attic. the police in town called us right after Easter and asked if we could help with this little baby. She was probably only 5 weeks old at the time. She is around 11 weeks now and doing great. She is a precocious little thing. She started jumping a bit earlier than other squirrels we have observed. It may be because she was very healthy when we got her. Many babies we have rehabbed have been starving and in very bad shape. Usually when they start jumping we start keeping them in the cage, but Cheyanne seems so different that we have been trying something different with her. She has been introduced to the people at an assisted living place in town along with Lucky our "blind" squirrel. Yesterday she was a hit at a local garden club with Lucky, also. I thought I would share a video that was taken by us the other day. I can't get the link button to work so if you "right click on the highlighted link will pull up a box, giving you an option to go to the page. Faster than copying and pasting after opening another page."* I think you will enjoy the scampering of Cheyanne.
* Thanks MILPAM3 for the computer lesson.
Thought I would add a sad note to Cheyanne's story...
This part is not the sad part. She grew up to be a beautiful sweet squirrel. She was loved around the neighborhood, for the most part. The mailman was very friendly with her and she would follow him around and get peanuts and other treats from him. She loved my husband and he loved her antics. He loved to show new people how he could call her and have her come running. She had many babies in the last couple of years, but we were not blessed to have them be as friendly as she was.
Sadly, she was killed by a vehicle on May 29th. It was exactly one month after we lost our sweet Lucky on April 29th.
