The false positivity promise

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

The greatest myth I am told over and over again is "just to be positive'. You see, as a pragmatist and I confronted time and time again with the notion that if I simply am positive things will go my way. The cold hard truth? Just being positive is inaction. Opportunities exist for those who show up to take them. Not those who stay positive and wait. Now some of you are reading this and nodding. You know what I am saying is true. That those times you dug deep to the core and pushed for what you wanted you got somewhere. It may not have been exactly where you thought you would land but it may have even led to something better than you could have dreamed.

Before you scroll down to tell me I am wrong. Think. Faith and positivity are lovely beautiful things. They bring comfort to yourself and others. People are drawn to positive people because they feel they can't fail when basking in their light. The secret is those positive people are also driven people. They strive for what they want. They ask for what they deserve. Are they afraid? Absolutely. Do they fail? All the time. The difference is they don't just use it as an excuse to justify inaction.

Today alone I was faced with...
Being contacted by a hiring manager at 7 AM and asked for a phone interview today. He then emailed me at 5 PM and said they decided not to hire anyone.
A call from my new weight loss doctor saying they can't find a lab that will do my tests without health insurance.
A flare up of my fibromyalgia
Last but not least an issue with my broker that made me rather upset.

I can hide. I can eat. I can cry. I might do all of the above but I will persevere.
The only way these things will get better is if I refuse to let them be excuses. Change is making the hard choices. Knowing your value and continuing to not accept less. It may be three steps forward and one step back but I will never tell myself false promises to placate my apathy.

We all have it inside us. It may be a whisper. It may be a roar. It most likely will oscillate between the two but it is there. Find your power.

Yeah, there have been some studies that show the downside of positive thinking. But then, of course, there are others that show (in some cases) it works.

It does no good to sit back and say, "Well, all this is hard stuff, but I know good things are coming my way, la ti da!"

But, if you look at those hard things and say, "This sucks, but I can figure out a way to deal with it," you have a chance -- and that is a type of positive thinking.

Rather than positivity, I try to make a habit of acknowledging all of the things that are going right amid the chaos that is my life -- especially on the hard days. It keeps me from feeling like the whole thing (read: my life) is going down in flames.

I agree with you, the cult of positivity is annoying, and can blind you to reality. Much better to approach things pragmatically and with the attitude that you can handle whatever hardships come your way.

May today balance out the difficulties of yesterday and you find success and possibility in whatever you do.

I like people who tell it like it is. You did that in your blog and it's so true! Nothing will happen unless you put in the work!

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a rough day. I hope things took a turn for the better. Tomorrow is a new day!
