1-day Plateaus? Our relationship with the scale.

I used to be obsessive about weighing myself, sometimes multiple times a day. I am trying to decrease that. I would like to weigh once per week, but I am actually weighing about 3-4 times per week. I know for some people daily weigh-ins work, and that is great as long as they don't have a negative impact from that.

I have a relative who is also working on losing weight. She weighs herself everyday. This week she mentioned to me that she is having trouble with plateaus. We report our results to each other every week and I know that she has been losing .5 - 2 pounds every single week for the last couple months. I said, "Wait! Do you mean that your weight is not going down every single day during the week? Is that what you mean by plateaus?!" Yes, that is what she meant. I was horrified. This is not the definition of a plateau. What a way to set oneself up for failure. I can't imagine thinking of several days every single week as being plateaus.

We all need to look at our relationship with the scale and decide what works best for us. If daily weighing causes no stress - great. But if it does cause stress or unrealistic expectations then it may be time to change things up a bit.

    That sounds like a recipe for anxiety for sure! I weigh myself almost everyday, but I don't "count" it until Friday. I couldn't imagine a "daily" plateau.

    I decided yesterday to get my scale out of the bathroom. Right now it's in an inconvenient place in the garage. I realize that I was letting my daily weighing effect my day. So we'll see how it goes. I haven't decided if I'll be weighing in every two weeks, weekly or monthly. I'll be getting my daily affirmation from my loose clothing.

    Trying to break my obsession. Thanks for the post.

    For right now, I am weighing daily. I would like to get to a point where I weigh in only once a week. If I stop weighing in, I need to be called out because that usually means that I'm struggling. And, since I'm a binger, I can do a ton of damage in just a day or a 2 day binge. Right now I need the daily accountability. I wouldn't be upset to see small gains or maintains throughout the week though, there are too many factors to consider to expect a loss every single day.

    Lots of people are confused about the scale. I am away and dread using alien scales. I'm a daily weigher and first thing in the morning. Outside scales are a no no.
