A couple Sparkfriends wrote on the comments on my blog yesterday with questions about arthritis. I have it, in my joints, both osteo and rheumatoid, and have a couple of suggestions.

The first one is diet. MANY experts think that a diet high in anti-oxidants helps relieve arthritis and it's symptoms. Mono-unsaturated fats, all berries, especially blueberries, cherries, salmon, whole wheat, soy products, lots of vegetables (they suggest organic), and beans. There are also supplements that sometimes do help. I take fish oil and tumeric, drink a tbsp. of apple cider vinegar twice a day, and am doing pretty well curbing the pain.

There are specific exercises for sore joints and the LAST thing you should do is not use them. The more fluid you get going through those sore joints, the better you will feel. I believe that doing yoga over the past nine months has done more for my back, knee and every other pain than anything else I have done.

A few people asked me about arthritic hands. Here is a great yoga exercise for helping with hands that ache:

Open up your hands, palms facing out, and then spread your fingers. One finger at a time, bend them, so when you are done, you are making a fist. Now pop your hand open until it is in the original position. Repeat whenever you feel a twinge. You can also reverse it and start with a closed fist. It takes a little practice to get good at opening/closing your fingers!!

I really do this about twenty times a day, and it has made a remarkable difference in the pain I have in my hands.

This is a good one to do in the car or in a line, or even watching TV.

Let me know if it helps!!

Spark on.
