Little Moments Bring Big Memories

Tuesday, March 01, 2016

Maybe it is due to my friend dying, last week. but I have been spending some time recalling memories of the past. When you go to a funeral, you run into many old friends that you have not seen in years. The first thing you do, with old friends, is reminence about past experiences. I have thought about this and decided to keep better track of experiences that occur each day. I need to write things down, to take more pictures and to share experience with my children. After a parent is gone, there are so many questions that you wish you had asked them. There is no time like the present to make memories.

While looking at photos, I remembered that I am 50 pounds heavier than when I graduated from high school. In college, I lived in a dorm. My method of travel was walking. It is no wonder that I lost more weight by walking all over a large campus. That means that I am 60 pounds heavier than in college. WOW!! What a shock. As many of us can say, I never dreamed I would gain so much weight in my life. I lost baby weight after giving birth. I eventually put it back on. At 60, I am still working to get it off.

My new plan is to stick with portion control. My biggest issues are that I put too much food on my plate. When I go out to dinner, I always think that I may as well "clean my plate." emoticon This week I have gone back to my good eating plan, I did this when I was young and thin.....leave food on my plate or use it as leftovers.

I am looking for good results.

The loss of your friend has moved you into a wonderful place of action!!! Being aware of each day is an admirable goal. Time is so very precious and not to be taken for granted!!! Writing down things gives a great visual!
    Hugs!

So sorry about your friend. Good idea to write down more and take pix. When I think about how much I have put on since high school, I cry - and I am still with the same man, so he also knows how much I have put on. Ugh. But we need to love ourselves, be patient, be wise (about portion size, etc.), and have confidence in ourselves that we can get to our goal. Hugs!

Try to make those memories not around food. The best are active ones, getting out in nature, playing with pets, just moving and being. Write a journal about your youth. As a daughter, one of the things I am most curious about is my Mother's life before she had me. Hers is amazing, but she is tight lipped and only drops the odd tidbit now and then. Her life could have a book written about it and a movie made. In fact, someone offered to write her memoir but she refused. Sad. When she goes all her memories will die with her and as she lost most of her old photos in a flood, so there is not even that for a reference :-( Don't leave your children with an unsolved mystery, just saying..
Use a nine inch plate and never heap it, automatic portion control. 1/2 should be veggies, then 1/4 protein, 1/8 fat, 1/8 carb.
Limit eating out or ask for half portions, restaurants are there to serve you, you can ask for your meal to be prepped in any healthy way you want.
You can do this!! Believe in yourself!

Sorry to hear you have lost a friend.

In recent years I have lost both parents and a dear aunt during the month of March. So, I really resonate with your experience of recalling past memories. As the anniversaries of their deaths approach, it is not unusual for me to go into a reflective state in which I recall past experiences.

    Take care of yourself. emoticon

    So sorry for your loss!
I find it interesting also to not only think about the time(many years) that I was thin, but also what I was doing. I was more active, lived in a large city, walked everywhere, and didn't own a car.
Studies have been done regarding obesity in the suburbs versus city, and they make sense to me because once I moved to the suburbs, you need a car more!
I'm 65' I no longer clean my plate, and I am determined that this is the last year that I am carrying this excess!
I also never would have believed that I would be this overweight- NO MORE!! emoticon

Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. emoticon I'm no good at leaving food on my plate, either, I find it a bit easier to keep portions smaller and eat it all. Seems at our age, we were all raised by mothers who believed in cleaning our plates, it's a hard thing to overcome. Good for you, going back to your healthy eating plan. :) emoticon
