Challenges, challenges

Friday, February 26, 2016

I haven't blogged in a very long time, and I wanted to update my status for my Sparkffriends.

My father's dementia continues to get worse, but we are still keeping him at home, not sure for how much longer. He rarely knows who I am now; my visits either frighten him or anger him, and this is difficult for me at times. He still recognizes my husband and smiles, so I take pleasure in that. We have great caregivers 6 days out of 7. Saturday we always get the luck of the draw with caregivers.

Jon and I enjoyed his professional conference in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. My sister helped out at home so that I was actually able to forget about dementia for long periods of time. I had never been to Las Vegas, and I am glad that I saw it once. We aren't gamblers, smokers or partyers, so we skipped all of that. We did enjoy wonderful French food at the Paris where we stayed. We dined at Giadas and Guy Fieris (sp?) who both host shows on the Food Network. We also walked a LOT looking at all of the hotels so that I didn't gain an ounce during my 8 day vacation. The highlight for me was taking a helicopter ride over the Las Vegas strip, over Hoover Dam and onto the floor of the Grand Canyon for a champagne lunch. Beautiful!

I have gotten serious about my eating and my exercise in 2016. I joined the 5% challenge and actually lost more than 5%. I am quite proud of that and feel so much better in my clothes. I still have a way to go, but I am moving in the right direction.

Tuesday I will be working as a poll worker for the presidential primary here in Georgia. My trainers tell me to expect a long, demanding yet rewarding day as a volunteer.

Wednesday morning I will have retina surgery on my right eye. Doctors are having to redo the vitrectomy they performed five years ago. The macular pucker (like a wad of cellophane) is growing back in that eye. With today's technology they now remove an additional layer of tissue, and they believe that the tissue will not regrow to distort my vision.

I am not sure how well I will see to be Sparking on the computer for awhile. I don't know when I will be free to drive again or when I will be allowed to return to water aerobics. I am the only driver since my husband is legally blind with macular degeneration, so my eyesight is always a big worry.

Please say a prayer that all goes well. Thank you so much.

    Hi Evelyn,
My thoughts and prayers are with for your retina surgery, and in caring for your dad. It is so difficult watching a beloved parent's mental/physical decline, but your presence means a lot! I am very glad you got a short trip away, and it sounds as though you and DH made the most of Las Vegas.

Congratulations on meeting and exceeding your 5% weight loss challenge!

I am so glad you were able to get away for several days and just focus on you and your hubby and it sounds like a great trip. We are going to Vegas in a few weeks, taking our girls with us. We don't gamble or drink either but Vegas is so big and a great walking city and so much to see and do so it is fun to go there even if you don't gamble.
I am so sorry to hear of your father getting worse, it is such a horrible disease and I pray for all of you.
I hope everything goes well with your eye surgery as well. Sorry to hear that you have to go back for more. Wishes for fast healing.
Good luck volunteering for the Presidential primary polls. That should be an interesting experience!
Big hugs and wishes for a good weekend.

Wow, you have done an amazing job on so many fronts!

My prayers are with you, as caregiving for parents in decline is a test of our true mettle.

More prayers for a textbook surgery on Wednesday. You seem to have a good perspective, and that improves your odds, IMHO.

We visited Las Vegas for a couple of days in October 2015. Like you, we neither gamble nor smoke nor party hearty, but we sure did walk a lot!

My prayers are with you for so many reasons. Caregiving is so physical and emotionally draining, glad you were able to get away. It is hard to watch a parent go down that path. I hope all goes well with your eye surgery. It is always frightening and with your husband's sight so bad and both he and mother depending on you it is more so I am sure. So hugs and prayers for strength and quick recovery. Hugs

You are definitely in my prayers.

So glad you got to get away! It is SOOOOooooo needed.

Sorry to hear of your Dad's decline. My Mom slips more each day, too, but continue to care for her here @ home (Mom and Dad live w/us. NO WAY could Dad handle all the car demands alone.

emoticon Prayers for you that everything will go exactly as it should or even better. So glad you were able to have a real vacation from caregiving. Have fun as a poll worker. That's one of many things I did during a long stretch of joblessness, and I loved it. Yes, it's a long day, but you help lots of people and learn about things you don't think of in the election process.

Thanks for the update, Evelyn. I've had my one trip to Las Vegas too... we don't gamble or drink much, but it good to see it... once.

The helicopter trip sounds wonderful. I've never been in one, but would like to someday.

I'm glad you were able to get away from the caregiving, at least briefly, you certainly deserved the break.

I have a friend in Nova Scotia who, I think, just had the same eye surgery. It's great that the procedure has been perfected since you had your first surgery, and I hope that everything goes well.

    Hugs, Gail

I wish you all the best in your upcoming surgery. It is truly amazing what can be done these days to correct eyesight and protect our eyes.
Sorry about your dad's continued decline. Does he react well to music? Maybe when he is confused or angry, try singing to him or putting music on from his era. That helped with my mother-in-law.
Also, good luck at the polls. I used to live in an area where there many senior citizens, and more than once I would be behind someone who didn't remember where they lived. The poll workers were always so gentle and understanding, which was really touching.
