I love coffee, but...

Continuing my WLS blog series ...

I wrote about attending a support session and discussing coffee. Let's face it, most of us LOVE coffee! Yes, some people hate it, and I wish I were one of them.

So... There was this conversation about coffee. It's not a good idea to drink it. But it's so difficult to give up! No kidding!

Of course there is the caffeine jitters and keeping me up all night, but that's just a given, right?

Caffeine is a diuretic, and increases the need for more water. Also coffee is too acidic for a healing stomach. There was a third reason to avoid it, but it's escaped me for the moment. When I remember, I'll add it to a future blog. If you know it, please tell me in a comment here, and I'll add it!

A fourth reason - for me - to avoid coffee is that I like mine light and sweet! I can somehow make a cup of decaf cost me over a hundred calories! Vanilla creamer anyone? And I don't want just one cup. Gimme three to get me through the morning!

My nutritionist told me that decaf with a little milk can be counted towards my minimum of 48 ounces of water a day. And of course I ran with that! Decaf, sweet-n-low, milk, and just a drop of a flavored creamer. But that drop just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Sigh... I gave up coffee months before WLS. Looks like I should give it up again. I'm really struggling with moderation.

What about you? If you like coffee, could you give it up?

PS: If you're planning to give it up, I'd suggest going to half-caf first, slowing dropping the amount of caffeine. Then giving up decaf shouldn't give you headaches.

I’m really into coffee too. I can do without creamer but I use Splenda packets. I try not to over indulge though...I’m limiting myself

I have it 1/3 hot milk to water, nice mouth feel and with 1% milk only about 50 calories.

I am a coffee-aholic...no sugar, but I do like it it light and drink way too much of it - at least 2 cups before leaving in the morning, a large one at work, then one to two more when I get home. I think giving it up would be extremely challenging for me but I imagine I would feel pretty good if I did after the withdrawal wore off.

My surgery is (hopefully!) in a few months and I'm struggling with the idea of giving up coffee. I know I need to do it soon, but, sigh...it's hard to imagine.

    Great blog post, btw.

I can't give up the coffee. Started out with one cup now I'm up to three a day.
I use sugar free creamer ( not great but better) and I could easily drink a whole pot!
So you've got me thinking that it's time for me to cut back also or learn to drink it black. LOL

I love coffee and couildn't give it up even if I know it would probably be a good idea for bladder health but love diet coke too and should have less caffeine! However there are worse things to have aren't there.

    Keep looking after yourself!

I've given up coffee........ several times!
I reign it back in when I realise it's getting too much again - I use decaff at home - and light creamer.

I used to like coffee. Gave it up, (aside from one cup of decaf cappucino maybe once a week, in a coffeeshop) never missed it since.

Given the trouble it causes it just wasn't worth the bother for me in the end.

Maybe you could agree to only have coffee when you're out of the house?

Sorry it cut me off....lol i would cut back on the additives a little at a time. Maybe 1 teaspoon of something a week untill u can drink it without all the extras... Or maybe try a flavored bean that will allow less sweetness

I trained myself to have coffee with just half and half in it. I slowly cut back on the sugar until i wasnt using any at all. I didn't think it was possible but i made it! You can too!

I love coffee!!! ☕️ I drink mine with no sweetener and non-dairy creamer. I was on a flight Sunday and drank that coffee black since they serve weak coffee. Overall I only drink one cup in the morning. I typically try to avoid it after 1 pm.
