WLS support is so important

Continuing my WLS blog series...
I recently attended a WLS support session.
The room was filled with of all kinds of people. Some were still trying to decide to have the surgery, some had their WLS years ago, and some were at every stage in between; every weight range, a large age range, many ethnicities; some shy, some outspoken. It was a great group.
People talked about the New Year, and recommitting to their new food and fitness lifestyles.
Some people had originally thought it would be impossible to gain weight after WLS. Knowing it's as easy to gain as before is a scary thing! But for so many, having been really heavy and then losing a lot, small gains were a big warning. No one wanted to go back there.
Others spoke of needing to remember to take their supplements or to drink enough water. Some even had trouble getting meals in regularly. I wish I had that problem!
There was a large conversation about coffee. It's not a good idea to drink it. But it's so difficult to give up! People who love it do NOT want to give it up.
We also discussed alcohol and soda. They should be eliminated totally. Or limited as much as possible. We know they are not good for us, and still we insist on having them. Somehow they don't seem to be as bad as deep fried Twinkies.
Sorry, I'm rambling here. The bottom line is that WLS support is important. It allows people to vent or ask questions and see what others are facing and how they deal with certain issues. For me it reminds me that I'm still learning and working towards my goals. Daily stresses can really distract me!
I think everyone can benefit from support of some kind. Not only WLS patients. Life is hard and we need help, even if it's just moral support. SP teams are a great source of support, but there is nothing like talking to others in person.
