Hospital...Day 2

Thursday, January 28, 2016

Well, I got the big 10-foot long ace bandage off this morning and then the two inches of cotton bandages, and got to see my 12-inch scar covered with staples. It should be a beauty. This one I earned!!

The pain will be there for a while, as the incision was deep, and it is still really swollen. I got up, after they took off the bulky wrap, and had put on this really awesome waterproof bandage, and I took a shower (didn't tell the nurses aides, as I was FINE), and got their wrath afterward. I hate that they think we are all incompetent.

I am going to a care center tomorrow, and the social worker came in last night to ask where i wanted to go. I told her I wanted somewhere with good food, that was not high calorie. She said, define good food. I said, well, if I ask for a salad, it should have no iceberg lettuce in it, and more than one tomato, and dinner should not be a beef dish fried with gravy. She laughed and told me she agreed. I guess there is a new care center open and has been getting rave reviews for their holistic and healthy approach. I hope to be going there!

Every single day will be better, easier, and I will be one day closer to alleviating pain. My darling Daughter visits me today, and I have a list of a few things i want from home, that she will be bringing.

Hope you are all doing wonderfully, and are finding better and more creative things to eat that I have!!

Spark on.

I am so glad things went well. Yes, nurses frown on pts getting up after surgery without help. Heal quickly! I hope the care center is great.

KUDOS on the care ctr. with REAL FOOD! Good for you for insisting, too.

Uh oh . . . . showering on your own. You little emoticon you! LOL

Glad the bandages are changed to less bulk. I remember that, too, when I had my knee replacement. You definitely have earned the zipper of honor.

Sounds like you're making great progress. My younger grandson was fascinated by my staple train tracks. I had my knees done a week apart due to other medical concerns. emoticon

I've got my fingers crossed that you go to the care center of your choice. Otherwise, I expect to hear that you raided the kitchen and made your own meals emoticon

Take care and don't overdo emoticon

emoticon No one thinks you're incompetent! They're thinking you are likely to have hypotension and to be affected by the meds you've taken, including sprinting to the toilet if the laxatives you were undoubtedly given to kick your GI tract back into action.

Health workers are ALWAYS going to err on the side of safety. It's no relief to them to know you weren't hurt while driving without your seat belt. They're protecting you against the odds and the odds are that if you're hurt in the hospital, it's going to be from a post-op fall.

emoticon Please, be gentle with yourself!

I think safety, protocol, and avoidance of any legal issues, are the driving force and not patient incompetence. Sounds like the new facility will be a great match for you. Steady progress wishes sent you way.

Sounds like you are going wonderfully well. I hope it is all plain sailing for you.
As somone who recently had surgery, her eis something to consider.

Remember that post op you will have the protective effect of the drugs, maybe euphoria, so won't really be feeling any ill effects of anything you do. But there could be consequences later, so consider erring on the side of caution until you are sure sensations are not being masked.

    glad all went well

I don't think the med staff feels you are incompetent, I think they just have to be careful that you don't fall.

hope you get to spend your recovery at the holistic center.

Sounds like things are going well, that's great. You have such determination. I remember that first shower after I had the surgery on my foot - it was the best shower I think I've ever had! Take care and speedy recovery!

I'm glad you have choices for where to stay on your "forced vacation" (said with a smile). Finding one that actually practices healthy living should be a no-brainer, right? When I look back on the hospital food I was given when I was laid up, I have to laugh. A place where you are supposed to get well, and they feed you THIS???

I bet that shower was awesome. I think I had to suffer through a month of sponge baths before I was able to get in the shower. But that first one felt SOOOOO GOOD!

Be safe, and I look forward to talking with you this weekend. In the meantime, heal quickly and wear that scar with pride!
