Eating poop pills could make you thin. Seriously.

Sunday, January 24, 2016

"In March 2016, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston will launch a clinical trial (Fecal Microbiota Transplant for Obesity and Metabolism) to study the impact of gut bacteria on weight. By transplanting the intestinal bacteria from a stool sample of a healthy, lean person into the gut of a person suffering from obesity, it might be possible to change the gut bacteria population of that obese person. As those lean microbesstart to populate the obese persons gut, it could reduce that persons propensity to obesity.

Or, to put it in less scientific terms, ingesting a tiny amount of fecal matter from a thin person could make you thin, too.

For a period of six weeks, some of the 20 patients taking part in the clinical trial will be given pills containing a tiny amount of a thin persons fecal matter, while the others will be given a placebo made of powdered cocoa and gelatin. Then, over the next 12 months, the researchers will track the weight and health of the 20 participants to see if there is any difference between those ingesting the poop pills and those ingesting the placebos. Theoretically, the people ingesting the fecal pills should lose more weight than the people ingesting the placebos."

There's a lot of good science behind this. If you want an interesting (and very funny!) read on all things Alimentary, check out Mary Roach's book "Gulp".

Even if your initial reaction is "yuck" people have done much worse in the name of health and beauty, and this treatment, at least, has real science backing it up. Fecal transplant has done wonders for people with IBS and other intestinal disorders.

My biology teacher told us that there used to be really effective diet pills. This was pre-1970 sometime. They were very effective, but people continued to lose weight even after they'd stopped taking the pills. Turns out they were tapeworm eggs!

I've done some research on this (reading and doing in a lab) and I completely agree. Read up on Rob Knight, he's one of the leaders in the gut microbiota and it's fascinating. It's showing just how important gut bacteria are to your overall health (including mental health as well!). However, you get your gut microbes from your mom through breast feeding, so it's also showing just how genetic it is.

If only all the probiotics out there had skinny people gut microbes!
