Biggest Loser at work

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

We are having our annual Biggest Loser contest at work. Three months to lose, and if you lose 10#, you get $50, 20# is $100, and I think 30# is $300. Early Feb to early May. My dilemma is, I participated in 2013, and let the contest get to me... I went off of my usual eating and exercise, which had gotten me an excruciatingly slow but healthy loss of about 1 pound per week for about 21 pounds total, 321 to 301. Once I saw people doing crazy fad-type things to lose weight and win money, I started trying things too. I stopped losing, dropped out and derailed my original workout plan. Since then I have gained and I'm at my highest weight ever. Do you think I should participate to help restart my weight loss effort, or steer clear? Usually competition works very well to help motivate me and keep me accountable. I'm not sure what happened that time. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks! Vanessa/ RunEarthFit

Sounds like you already have the answer, but I wanted to say I really hear this. I can get sucked into crazy thinking and habits only to do something wrong and blow it all to hell.

One big question would be: have you really checked in with yourself? What was going on for you last year at the time, what is going on this year emotionally and outside of health stuff? What could be triggers? Do you feel more confident?

Ok that's like a hundred questions. But you get the idea.

If you don't have to pay to play, and you can let your inner voice be the strongest, I'd say what the hell. But only you know you, right?

Hi AliHikes, that sounds like sound advice... It's like I lost perspective and the end result was a disaster.... That terrible regain. And I didn't win any money either, ugh. Thanks for your reply!

I think I would stay with your usual program, and enter the competition only if you think you can stay with your usual slow and healthy weight loss fitness program. If you will be too tempted to go on an extreme and unsustainable diet, don't enter it. Do your own thing. The cash rewards are not worth the inevitable regain or health issues that arise from an unhealthy diet.
