Using a walker and loving it! (Plus BECK Day 4)

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

I have had huge issues with back pain for the past 12-18 months (maybe more!). At first, scans showed abnormalities that the oncologists were pretty sure was bone mets, but no it's just degeneration because of all the extra weight, lack of exercise, hormonal treatments, etc.

So to them, I'm perfect, because I don't have more cancer. They really don't care about the weight, possible development of diabetes, the pain, etc. Just the cancer.

Frustrating. Not just because of their attitude, but because I was expecting help and gradually deteriorated while they were doing all their scans and such.

All that aside, I finally organized myself to actually use the walker that I brought home after Dad died. It's HUGE (Dad never did anything small LOL!) and awkward for shopping in stores at Christmas time. Truth be told, I also felt like using it would be like giving in, like I should be able to get better without it. So I avoided it.

Today, I used it on and off all morning at the hospital. It's like a miracle. Negligible pain... hardly none at all. So now I'm looking for occasions to use it - maybe I can get to the mall three times a week to do some mall walking. Maybe it will be nice enough outside (i.e. not windy!) to walk outside. My son isn't working as much now that the holidays are over, so he can come with me so I will be safe.

It's like a whole new world opening up for me! Now the Camino in 2018 seems absolutely reacheable.

For BECK, Day 4 -- giving myself credit. I got over that resistance I had of using the walker, and got great success from it. I also planned my morning so that I would get extra time to walk around the hospital (people are nice, they kept asking me if I was lost LOL!)

So onto Day 5 of BECK.

I sure do understand back pain. I have had two back surgeries. The last was this past August. I had spinal fusion and it is going to take a year to get over.

Good news about the walker. I am glad you can walk without so much pain and even plan on walking at the mall. That is awesome.

    Best wishes.
