New battery, new perspective

The battery on my Spark Activity Tracker beeped red last night. Since it has been about a year since I last had to change my battery, I couldn't quite remember how to do it. I struggled and twisted and turned until my fingers were as red as the Tracker. I recalled there was a simple trick, I just couldn't remember what it was. So I looked up SparkPeople for a quick reminder and realized I was turning it in the wrong direction. While I should have been turning it counterclockwise I was going against the grain and it was never going to open.
I'm finding myself in a new year with the same dreams and aspirations, but still not getting anywhere closer to achieving my goals. It might have something to do with the fact that I've been going about it the wrong way. While I love to be different and go against the grain, sometimes the path of most resistance is just the wrong direction.
I've struggled with my weight for years. However, I also know what it is I need to do in order to lose the excess weight. I love how I feel when I exercise, I just never seem to have the energy to do it. While I often believed the biggest reason I never had energy was because of the excess weight, I also discovered that I don't sleep well at night. While I don't have sleep apnea, I do take very shallow breaths at night, so my brain is never quite oxygenated enough to give me a proper rest. I have a CPAP machine to help with that, I just never use it.
This past October, I quit my job due to excess stress. After working as an employment counselor for persons with physical disabilities and at risk youth for almost 5 years, the exhaustion finally caught up. My husband and I decided that I would quit and stay at home working as a full-time writer. Since I was a little girl, my dream has been to be a full-time writer. Right now I am literally living my dream.
With one exception...
I'm not doing any writing. I'm not sure why I'm so afraid to write, or really just what is holding me back. Writing is my dream. It's my passion. And I'm pretty good at it! I'm just not getting it done. I have all these great ideas that want to get written, I just don't know where to start.
Weight loss can seem so complicated. What do we eat? How much can we eat? When are we supposed to exercise? How long are we supposed to exercise? What do we eat before and after we exercise? One day this food will be healthy the next day that food is healthy. Low fat. Hi fat. Low carb. High protein. It can get pretty complicated and quite overwhelming. But as I was changing the battery on my Activity Tracker, I realized sometimes it's important to start from scratch. Get back to basics.
Just simplify things.
That means simple balanced meals. Basic exercises like walking, swimming and using my own body for resistance. It means getting plenty of rest each night, and that means using my CPAP machine. When it comes to my writing, it means start off simple with basic exercises. Write gibberish for one minute. Find a picture and write about that picture for 2 minutes. Starting habits doesn't need to be that complicated. Like changing the battery, going with the grain with the path of least resistance can help make the biggest changes. And I'm excited. But before I go do anything else, I should really go clean my CPAP machine so its ready to go when I fall asleep tonight.
