I'm Done With Acting My Age!

Monday, January 11, 2016

I, like most other kids of the '70s and '80s, was as skinny as a rail, growing up. Then what happened?! Life and kids and slow down and hurry up and stress and ... everything but what I was doing through my childhood. Some things need us to be adult-minded, like showing up for work, getting those bills paid, and the kids off in the right direction. Some things, though, we might need to take back to our childhood drawing board.

Difficult to believe, I wasn't really running my fool head off 24/7 as a child, so I don't need to do that, now, either. I did sit down long enough for classes, dinner, homework, and despite my extreme ADHD as a child, I even managed some quiet crafts and a bit of reading! I also used to sleep so soundly, it amazed my mom! What happened to that?!

Not too long ago, I read an article about the idea of incorporating short bursts of running into the day, and the amazing success that had been found even if it's only one day per week!. The study that I read about had four intervals of walk/run. It made me think back to my childhood. Every school day at recess, we'd run like maniacs out into the school yard, maybe play some active games, or maybe just sit and gab with a friend. "I'll race you to the... " with a good friend. Short bursts of running, throughout the day....

Short bursts of running offer benefits that are not enjoyed by the marathon runner nor the couch potato. If you are not ready for running, yet, these benefits can also be enjoyed to a slightly lesser degree, by simply getting out and walking briskly in short bursts.

I went out for a quick run, yesterday. I only did two bursts, since the air was so cold, I didn't want to damage my lungs. If it's too nasty today, I can wait for tomorrow - it is supposed to warm up again. I love that it takes so very little time to make such a difference! While I'm at it, I might try to recapture some of that childhood bliss. Even if I just have to race myself to the hydro pole or some silly thing! My heart will thank me, my weigh scale will thank me, and my stress level is sure to drop! (maybe I'll start sleeping like a child again!) :D

Reminder, if you've got ice and snow like we do, be careful not to fall and not to get too cold! Take care of your eyes, your lungs, your skin... all the more reason to keep it short and sweet! :D Find a way to enjoy your outing - that has to be key to keep wanting to do this!!!! :D
