Looking for Solutions to Chronic Back Pain

Saturday, November 28, 2015

When the weather gets cold and damp, old aches and pains in my back reappear. They are starting to affect my sleep. If you have a condition like this, I would love to know how you deal with it. Thanks! Today I have a fair in Washington, NH. I love sitting and talking with old and new friends at events like this.

I have a birth defect that was found after many decades of pain. I went to the physio and got some exercises -all the other people I went to were very little help. I keep moving and only lay down when it is really bad. I only sit for 20 mins at a time and that is if reaaly necessary. Lots of Zumba really helps too.

Hope you find the best things for yours.

I hope you find something that helps. I have suffered back pain so I know it can be very debilitating. Once you are feeling better try to find exercises that will help you stay feeling better. emoticon

As others have said, it is important to now exactly WHAT is causing your back pain. I've had MRI's done, as they show in better detail what the problem is, rather than just an x-ray, so that would be the first thing I'd recommend doing. Second, I heartily recommend going to a good chiropractor. I've been going to mine for almost 15 years, and he has helped me tremendously! That being said, once you have osteoarthritis, there really is no way of stopping it, and once it finds your weak point, it seems to take up residence there! That is my situation with my lower back and my knee right now, and the only thing that has helped it was to go to a pain specialist. I had 2 injections in my lower back. The arthritis was impinging on my sciatic nerves - 'twas horrendous. Now pain free. My knee - very little, if any, cartilage left. Having the hyloronic (sp) injections done there, and already feel SO much better!! I also take Celebrex on a regular basis. I have no ill effects from it, I tolerate it well, so that is another option (I have arthritis everywhere). I try to avoid Advil, as that does elevate my blood pressure, but if you don't have that issue, most doctors recommend 1,000 mg to treat muscle/tendon pain. That's 5 capsules. Lot's of info - but first, go to your own dr. and ask for a MRI and get that done so you know exactly what you're dealing with, if you don't already know.

I like AUTHENTICALLYME's suggestion of a heating pad for sleeping on. I've been relying on Ibuprofen every night. And I know I shouldn't. Will have to look into that myself.

I had a bad back for sometime now. I find relief from my chiropractor and stretching exercising specifically for the back.. There is actually a good selection of lower back exercises on this site. It's not a cure-all but it helps

Daily stretches and heating pad to back are the positives, oh and making sure I am not picking up heavy items which trigger a flare up

Heated mattress pad! I became a devotee from the moment I first experienced one a couple years ago. My Mom had already been using one for almost a decade.

Have fun! Get a plan of exercises and stretches for the back. It has worked for me though our temps never get freezing cold.

Looks like what I would have suggested for your back has already been shared. We use organic coconut oil emoticon emoticon and try to keep the core exercises going emoticon emoticon . We are less conscientious about stretching emoticon ...and perhaps we need a new mattress, too. I try to avoid constant sitting (It's the hyper in me) emoticon emoticon , drink my water emoticon ... and these help keep me limber. I think lots of veggies and fruit are good, too... emoticon ...Oh and wearing something extra warm around your middle emoticon
Looking so forward to touching bases with you today!!! emoticon

When I get any lower back arthritis or more frequently knee & finger joint pain, I exercise the area involved & use warm baths or heat afterward....Whenever I've used an anti inflammatory like naproxen it has worked the OPPOSITE & just made me tired...

Already mentioned is voltaren...which I get good muscle pain relief from following any kind of heavy physical work.

Sorry but I don't have back pain but I do have arthritis in my ankle and some of my joints and I have found that organic coconut oil helps with the pain. I think that it keeps the joints lubed so that they don't rub together so much.

I would have to ask, as SEAGLASS did, has your Dr. given you a diagnosis? That would refine the treatment plan a great deal. In general:

    1. Make sure you're doing core strengthening exercises. That relieves some of the pressure off the back.

    2. Be sure you're doing stretches after exercise. That helps keep the muscles limber.

    3. Are you using heat? Ice?

    4. There are prescriptives that could help like Voltaren, Lidocaine ointment.

    Good luck!

If your doctor has ruled out anything seriously wrong (slipped disc, for esxample) - have you considered a new mattress? We recently bought a new one (the other was 10 years old, apparently getting 8 - 10 years out of a mattress is good these days) and I have to say, it really does make a difference. I'm not totally pain free - ahh, the joys of getting more mature - but the new mattress definitely helps, especially sleeping all night and waking up without aching.

I have right sided sciatica - which I use a leg wrap called "Be Active" for. Saw the ads on TV, and was desperate for relief. It's a reversible wrap - can be used on the L or R side (they recommend not wearing them on both legs at the same time). I'm on Motrin routinely, from a baseline of 400 mg a day, to up to 3200 (max 800 mg at a time) for really bad days. For some really odd reason, when I start back to work (I work 12 hour shifts 3 X a week), I get terrific back pains the first night (another nurse told me she gets the same thing). This is my 3d night & I'm cruising, as I did last night, but, oh, the pain the first night! Hurts from my knees up to mid back. Standing up and bending over as far as I can for about a minute helps for a while.

Good luck - hope you get to enjoy the craft fair.
