Injury Invites Creativity

Saturday, October 31, 2015

A little over a week ago, mu achilles tendon (the one behind my heel) suddenly ruptured (partially) and I ended up wearing a big heavy space boot to keep my foot and ankle immobile.
I'll have to wear it at least 3 more weeks, which means no more yoga, no more Jazzercise and no more fast walking until it heals and I can wear a regular shoe. I'm supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible, so my husband has encouraged me to do what I can to exercise without damaging that foot. We have a recumbent exercise bike in our community center and we use it for 10 to 15 minutes every other day. We also have a video called "Chair Exercise"which is a really good workout for abdominal and upper body muscles while sitting in a chair. I can walk up to the community center wearing my boot and using a walker to keep from falling. I have never had an injury quite like this, so it's taking some creativity to
figure what I can do to use up the calories I eat. I'm also trying to cut back on some calories while I'm less active than usual. When the doctor first told me I would have to be immobile for a month while this tendon heals, I thought to myself, "Oh no! I'll gain weight." However,
I'm hoping that when my foot is back to normal, I'll still be close to my goal weight. Of course, as soon as I have the doctor's permission, I'll be back at Jazzercise, doing yoga and walking every day. All my team members who have health issues and have posted blogs about how they overcome them have really inspired me not to let a mere ruptured tendon keep me down. Thanks to this team for keeping me keeping on.

Good job on the creativity! I have a similar problem. But I am not exercising as when i fell from a rollerskating fall, I injured my tailbone. So I am just resting. The getting up and down from the LazyBoy chair is enough for me right now ! emoticon

Your creativity will serve you well!

Hope you are managing well and perhaps, the space boot is now off your foot?

Anyway, wishing you the best as you support your body's healing process.

Great attitude, and good job finding alternatives! Our public access channel broadcasts a chair exercise class, and even though I don't have issues currently, it's always on my mind as an alternative. Speedy recovery to you, and I know you're mentally strong enough to weather this!

    Peggy,

I spent 6 months in the hospital from a car accident, and it took me a total of almost 2 years before I was able to walk without a walker, drive, and take care of me. Girl, I won't lie, I did lose a lot of weight, as my body burned more energy and used what calories I was eating to heal itself. When I got the go ahead from my doctors, I was right back at it, full force! You may want to try water aerobics. That's what I started back with and man does it give you a workout, and you don't even know it. I pray that you heal quickly!

    Blessings!

Back when I broke my toe a couple of summers ago, I had the same concern. I had to cut back my calories quite a bit, and with spark's help on helping me guide how much to cut them, I managed to maintain where I was through the injury. It can be done, but it is hard. I so hate cutting back my calories that much and I love my walking, and that was not doable much at first.
