Toujeo insulin

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Well my endocrinologist enrolled me in the trial program for this new insulin that's just been approved by health Canada. I don't start taking it until Friday night so I'll have the weekend to deal with any side effects before needing to be at work. Semi nervous about the new insulin as its a condensed version of Lantus (yes I know it's not interchangeable but for all intent of purpose it's condensed Lantus). Reading the drugs profile n side effects increased hypos until correct dosage is found is something I'm not looking forward to since I've already got hypo unawareness as is to as low as 1.8 (23). Was put on it because I'm between 80 n 100 units of Lantus dependingon my daytime numbers. But my evening numbers start to clime after dinner into the hyper range n he doesn't understand why they are doing this. I think it is because the Lantus has warn off n isn't there in the background to keep things in check.despite the insulin being long acting at 24 hours I don't think it's lasting that length of time in my system. Oh well time will tell how it goes I'm on the 4 month trial of it, so we'll know the results when he pulls my blood next visit if it's helpful or not.

All the information I read about Lantus said it was effective for 22 hours. That leave 2 hours out of the day for our sugars to climb. And once it climbs, it takes time to get it back down again.... Some people split their dose up into 2 injections so they are somewhat covered 24 hrs a day.

So what dosage are they starting you on with this new one? I am very interested in how you do on it because I have been wondering about any advantage to switching to a different insulin. Like you I am on Lantus 100 units a day and that still does not keep me in the best control and using Novo Rapid can sometimes have unpredictable results. Lots of hypos or depending on what I eat, my numbers continue to climb long after the Novo has been used up..... so I am constantly testing and adjusting a few units at a time to try to keep it from spiking too high. I recently tried an experiment of using even more Lantus and less Novo Rapid throughout the day and had great success but of course it was not sanctioned by my doctor so could not keep it up.

So I will be waiting for your report with baited breath......

I started on Toujeo a week ago and I experienced no side effects. The only difference between it and Lantus is it goes in easier than Lantus.
    Good Luck!

As a nurse, I know how difficult it can be to find the right protocol to control blood sugar. I hope this works for you.
