Accomplished a Goal Today

This summer I began to run. I honestly didn't think running would ever be a part of my fitness routine, as my knees are arthritic and they HURT. But as I increased my walking distance and time, I discovered that my knees were getting stronger and hurting less, and so I started to do some running. Then a friend challenged me to a 5k, which we completed on September 19th.

I don't run every day - I swim a few times a week and walk or run or hike a few times a week. But I've been wanting to do a cross-country run on the hiking trails in our local state park - trails which go up and down the hills surrounding the lake.

Today I did it! I ran the first mile + a bit, then walked for a while and then ran again, finishing off with a walk - for a total of 36 minutes. It was a beautiful run - crunching through the fall leaves, up and down the wooded trails. Refreshing, exhilarating and yes, tiring! I'm used to running on primarily flat surfaces!

I hope to do it a few more times before snow blankets the trails - but then I plan to try out my snowshoes!
