Is That A Roar I Hear?

Friday, October 16, 2015

Tomorrow I will participate in my first charity run. My team and I will be walking/running the October Pink Run for breast cancer awareness. We are walking in memory of Julie Whaley, a beautiful woman whose battle was an inspiration to all who knew her. We are all excited about honoring her memory!

But wait, I would also like to say I am terrified! As I was walking on the treadmill yesterday and seeing my time I started to panic. I began to hear all of these voices, "What are you thinking? Look at how slow you are! My goodness, a woman of your size has no business participating in an event where there are serious athletes! You are going to embarrass your team. What if you are so slow that by the time you get to the finish line, if you get to the finish line, there will be no one there because the race is already over?" On and on these voices tormented me as I was training.

Then, I saw my reflection in the window and I started to smile. I screamed a silent, "SHUT UP!!!!" New voices started and I began to hear, "So what...so what if you are slow? So what if there are real athletes, good for them! So what if you are the only one who sees yourself cross the finish line, because you ARE going to cross that finish line! So what you are fat, you ARE 75 pounds lighter than you were six months ago. Yes, Lisa, you have lost 75 pounds. You CAN now walk 4-5 miles in one workout session! I completed that session with my best time yet, 32:20. Yeah, I know that is SLOW, but it is still faster than my time six months ago, when this body wasn't moving off of the sofa!

As I was finishing, the song, Roar, started to play in my headphones. What a fitting end to my workout. I am more than I was six months ago and tomorrow as I cross that finish line everyone is going to hear me ROARRRR!
