No Meat November

Friday, October 16, 2015

I get bored easily. If I want to stick to something, I have to keep challenging myself. I finish my C25K today and will soon be slugging along to increase my distance to 4 miles by Thanksgiving. I've decided to add another challenge to the coming month by declaring it NO MEAT NOVEMBER!!!! Now, I already don't really eat a lot of meat to begin with. I will, however, eat it at someone else's house or out at a restaurant. Basically, I don't cook meat myself too much. I know what you're thinking, "But Ellaguru, what about Thanksgiving?! How will you survive?" That won't be a problem. I only spend every other Thanksgiving with my family. This year, I am spending it with friends, most of whom are vegetarian. There will be plenty of options at our Friendsgiving (Thanksfriending?).

Like I said, this won't be a huge change for me. Except...seafood. I'll have to change the fish I eat twice a week. I LOOOOOVE me some seafood. I could eat something from the ocean for every meal. Seriously, last time I went snorkeling, all I could like of was how delicious all the pretty fish would be. I even contemplated diving down to grab some sea urchin for lunch. If reincarnation is real, I'd like to come back as an otter so I can wrap myself in seaweed, float on my back all day, and chow down on fish. Anyways... seafood is meat (despite what some people may tell you, it's animal parts, so it's meat). It's gonna be tough to give up seafood.

I'm also on the lookout for protein sources that doesn't involve me eating tofu all the freaking time. I love tofu, but that much soy isn't good for you... it's highly processed... it has a compound in it that blocks estrogen and can mess with your lady parts... Monsanto supplies 98% of soy and while I don't have an issue with GMOs I disagree with their business practices... blah blah blah. I already eat hummus, almonds, and yogurt daily so I want something other than those. Hemp protein makes me paranoid because I get drug tested at work. I'm not sure if eating hemp protein daily will make me test positive, but I'd rather not risk it. Nuts, seeds, and beans are my only option I guess. Meh, it's only a month. I got this.

Any non-soy, non-hemp vegetarian protein ideas or recipes?

Good luck with your no-meat November! Nut butters. Eggs, milk, and cheese, since you're doing vegetarian and not vegan. Make sure you eat lots of leafy greens like spinach to keep your iron up. That's about all I've got. I can't imagine going meatless. I have meat of one kind or another nearly every day at dinner. True, we go out of our way to locally source our meat from local farmers or we raise it ourselves (chicken), but we do eat a bit of it!
