The above is a special math equation for my family. I solved it, three years after suffering a brain injury. I hadn't been able to recognize most numbers, repeat or write numbers down, and struggled greatly doing simple arithmatic. In addition to the language and memory problems, this made keeping my job as a secretary, and daily life, difficult.
Then one day, my children were playing a game, lobbying math problems back and forth, and disagreed about an answer. I said, "no, Aubs is right, the answer is 80%." My kids' mouths dropped open and they stared at me... It took a moment and then I realized I had mentally computed a math problem, without an effort! I could actually "see" the numbers in my head.
It was still hard overall, and the numbers 5-6-7-8-9 continued to give me a lot of problems - I just couldn't recognize or remember them - however, as the years went by, my brain continued to heal, and gradually I regained most of my cognitive abilities.
One thing I still have a lot of problems with is pushing the buttons on a phone, which made going through voice mail systems very confusing. So I volunteered for a program that involves reporting via phone, punching in several short codes daily, to challenge myself and work my brain.
Well, long story short, I've been on SP for two months now, and something amazing has happened. While thinking about a post to the thread "What Can You Do Now That You Couldn't Do Before", I thought about how much easier it is for me to dial and work with the phone. It has become easier and easier to punch in the codes, take care of our bills, you name it. I am sure the math involved in the food and exercise trackers has given my brain an extra boost. When I showed my daughter, it was very emotional... It's so nice to know it's never too late for improvement and healing!
