Beck Trek - Chapter 10 - Day 39 - Keep up with Exercise

Monday, October 05, 2015

My current exercise plan:

M-W - RIPPED
T-Th-Sa - Spin
Su - Outdoor run/walk (minimum of 3 miles)
All weekdays: Three 10 minute walks around my work campus (morning, mid day and afternoon)
M-F - Plank for 5 minutes

I meet this plan about 90% of the time. The hardest part is the short walk 3 times a day. Breaking away from the desk is tough!

I pack up my gym clothes for the whole week every weekend and make sure I have everything I need with me every day.

The RIPPED classes are in the gym at my workplace right after work. A co-worker is a certified RIPPED instructor and she does the classes for free. How cool is that? RIPPED stands for Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance and Diet. My instructor throws in an abs section as well. We use light weights and work the whole body. Plus, the routines change periodically, so your muscles stay confused.

I go to my regular gym for Spin. Spin was the exercise that kept me going when I first lost 60 pounds. When I started Spin I was so out of shape that I couldn't even hold my body upright on the bike. I had to rest my elbows on the handlebars. The thing I loved about it most was that it was held IN THE DARK! I didn't feel like everyone was watching me when I couldn't keep up. If you are self-conscious about exercise, I highly recommend Spin. It's a high energy class, but you can go at your own pace and resistance, and slowly build up your ability.

I did the plank challenge and gradually built up my time by 15 second intervals. I'm now up to 5 minutes. Planking works the whole body and I intend to keep it up. There are 20-something year olds in my office who can't even come close to my plank time. Take THAT you snot-nosed babies!

The Sunday walk/runs haven't happened a lot lately. If I have my grands on the weekend or other plans, it hard to get out there and get it done. I signed up for a half marathon in March. That will help my motivation.

Since I started this journey in 2008 I've had some periods where I fell slack on exercise for long periods. Typically it happens around the holidays (when I need it the MOST), or when there is something particularly stressful going on in my life (it would help RELIEVE that stress). Somehow I've always found my way back. I'm sure you've all heard that successful weight loss is 80% nutrition/20% exercise. I strongly believe that, but I also know that keeping my body moving is extremely important, especially as I age.

I accept that successful dieting requires me to keep exercising. I'm grateful every day for a healthy body and the opportunity to work out.

You are such a model for a vigorous exercise program! I do so admire your commitment and the way you obviously relish the whole experience.

It was great seeing the whole program described here. I know how hard you work at your career and your family. But this is also your priority. Right up there with the biggest and most important tasks you have to accomplish. This is a road map for exercise. Reading this is empowering for others like me.

That is an impressive workout schedule! I'm still trying to find a workable routine with my current job and commute. I'm active, but not as much as I want and need to be. That is great that you have the RIPPED class right at work. Very cool.

Doing the PLANK is hard. (Doesn't cost much in dollars though).
