Beck Trek - Chapter 9 - Day 31 - Decide About Drinking

Hubby and I popped over to Biloxi, MS (2 hours away) yesterday for a quick get-a-way and a Billy Idol concert. It was great fun and good to get out.

Back in my overweight days we went to Biloxi a LOT...almost every weekend. We would start the trip with drive through McDonalds in the car (along with various unhealthy road trip snacks), then pig out on Mexican food and margaritas at our fav restaurant when we arrived, followed by gambling and more drinking, and often a late night dessert at a casino bakery. In the morning we would hit the casino breakfast buffet (for "free" of course) before heading home.

I think this activity was a bit about our 3 kids becoming independent and moving out, and us getting a taste of kid freedom.
emoticon (not!)

This trip was very different. We ate before we left the house and the car snacks consisted of water and fresh apples. Hubby loves steamed crab legs, so we went to the casino buffet for dinner (had a coupon). While I wouldn't recommend this for a novice weight maintainer, for me it was no temptation at all. I had a big plate of salad...various lettuces and spinach leaves, cucumbers and grape tomatoes (variety of veggies not mixed with some type of mayo dressing was limited). I brought my own pre-measured salad dressing in my purse (Bolthouse Farms Yogurt Ranch). I enjoyed a bowl of cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and pineapple chunks for dessert. I ate slowly and took in my surroundings...lots of very heavy people gorging themselves on tons of food. It made me sad...especially since at one time I was one of them.

We hit the casino for a bit after dinner. Hubby hit 4 aces on video poker. Cha-ching!

I lost.

After freshening up and changing for the concert, we boogied down with a super energetic 80s rockin' crowd. FUN! I rewarded myself with a Billy Idol T-shirt to commemorate the night. We chatted with the T-shirt selling dude. Billy turned 60 this year and is looking good. Go to my sparkpage for a pic of shirtless Billy Idol. T-shirt selling dude said Billy gave up cocaine and started going to the gym. He has two kids....and realized he didn't want to miss out on any of their lives because of his stupid bad habits.

I hear ya Billy Idol!!! More! More! More!

After the concert I had a delicious protein bar that I packed for any "just-in-case" moment that came up. All tracked...and I ended the day under my calorie range.

We rested well in a nice room and came home this morning sans post buffet stupor.

On the subject of this blog...
Even with weight loss/maintenance, I do enjoy an adult beverage on occasion. I am a fan of what I call "skinny cocktails," diet or club soda mixed with liquor. Last night I had two Jack/diet cokes, one in the casino and one at the concert. I see very little effect of doing this on my weight.

I also like red wine. My first choice is a muscadine grape wine that we get from a local winery. It's a special occasion thing and, if I drink it, it is always included in my food plan and tracked.

There are some times when only a brewski will do. Most races serve free beer at the finish line. I don't always partake, but when I do I track it and hold myself accountable for it.

I certainly say all of this with caution. Too much alcohol can interfere with good judgment which can destroy even the staunchest of food planning...and I have certainly been there.

So it's a personal decision. What works for me may not work for you.

Lucky you, a Billy Idol concert emoticon emoticon

What a huge healthy difference this trip from the previous being healthy ones. About drinks, I believe everything occasional and with moderation is OK.

Were you at the Jimmy Buffet Maragritaville casion/Hotel, by chance?? My dream to get there with my girlfriends soon.

I am a beer drinker. Period.

Hasnt really been a downfall until lately.

I used to drink a lot (6-10 beers on a friday) out dancing to bands & I never ate - it filled me up. But never a good morning for walking/going on runs.

Lately I only have a beer or two & I am eating everything.
emoticon But up to get out & enjoy the day.

    Give & take of alcohol...

Sounds like you had a wonderful time and congrats on the new and improved schedule! In my prior life I thought I couldn't have fun unless I was able to eat with abandon. I actually have much more fun and enjoy my food much more when I eat with restraint and stay on plan.
