Something New

Tuesday, September 01, 2015

When I was a freshman in college, I worked in the vice president's office of student affairs. I don't remember much about my job duties (this was 20 years ago after all) but there are certain things about my coworkers I'll never forget. The beautiful golden brown tan Dr. Robinson always obtained whenever she was in the sun for more than an hour. Tasting tiramisu for the first time with my buddy Nate. Listening to Peggy discuss her infertility issues ad nauseum.

And then there was Michael.

Michael was a perfectly pleasant man, a gentleman, but to be perfectly honest there wasn't much remarkable about him. What I remember most is this: Michael hadn't had a bite of chocolate in over 20 years. He confided in me that he'd been overweight as a child and that the only way he'd been able to get his weight under control was to stop eating his favorite binge food.

I think that's the point I've finally gotten to.

I keep trying to eat chips "in moderation" but it isn't working.

I think it's time to take a break.

A break from counting calories or points.

A break from hopping on the scale EVERY, SINGLE day.

And a break from trying SO HARD to moderate my own favorite binge foods, potato chips.

Instead of focusing so much on what I'm not supposed to eat, I'm ready to put the focus on what I should be eating. Fresh fruits and veggies. Tofu and nuts for protein. Foods that can actually be found in nature and not in the dollar bin at my local grocery store.

I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you all so much! I do feel like I'm on the right path now... finally! Melissa, when I was growing up I was the only khadija I knew but ever since queen latifah played a character named Khadija on her tv show living single, the names become really popular among non Muslims. emoticon

I think this is a fabulous plan!! Taking the focus off of the can't foods and finding pleasure in the fresh, whole foods that abound! I think weighing every day is a mistake anyhow... It does not work for me. I get my mood too tied to what the stupid scale says!! BTW, I have someone in my class this semester with the same first name as you. I'd never heard it before you and there she is! I was happy and she was happy that I didn't make a face when saying her name!! Hope you are doing well! ~Melissa

You are on the right track now. I was the same way, focusing on "can't haves" and "must dos" and "should haves". Too much negativity.

Changing the focus to healthy food and activity, every day, that is good for me and not worrying about a number really turned things around for me.

    You are on your way!

im not saying you're an "addict" but from an addiction perspective this makes total sense- if you have any of your trigger food it just sets u up to want more and more. Good luck to you and don't feel bad cutting out the chips your body will thank u!
