True or False: Residents of developed countries (like the U.S.) are MORE likely to experience allergies than people in developing areas of the world.
Explanation
Generally speaking, developed countries have much higher incidences of allergies than developing areas of the world. Scientists believe that the clean and sanitized homes of the industrialized world are actually detrimental to the immune system, and that exposure to illness-causing bacteria is necessary for the immune system to function optimally. When your immune system is not challenged by natural foes, it malfunctions and becomes supersensitive to seemingly harmless substances.

In my opinion this statement is not true. Undeveloped is not the same as dirty homes. I find such a statement is quite racistic.
As a ceramist (potter) I know that when you vacuum-clean small particles are whirled into the air. This way of cleaning may be the cause of many allergies.
Another source to allergy may be the many chemicals that are added to the food we buy in supermarkets. In my childhood food was made of natural food with less or no chemicals added. At that time allergy was rare compared with to day. This was the sixties.

In my ceramic workshop I only sweep the big particles and wash the floor and never vacuum clean in order not to blow small particles into the air.

I think that if underdeveoped countries had people going to the doctors more often, they might find they had a higher rate of allergies. I suspect people are just living with it because medical attention costs too much. Also, I think air pollution is the cause of a lot of problems, including allergies, in more developed countries.

And yet, children in families with pets (dogs, cats) tend to have fewer allergies than children in families that don't...

There ARE a lot of variables!

My allergies have gotten worse over the years. I contribute to not being as diligent cleaning as I should. I have SEVERAL cats and when I sweep & mop often, I have fewer symptoms.
