Nursing School is Hazardous to Your Health

When I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes (wow, nearly a year ago now) I had to withdraw from school and sit out a semester from the nursing program. I chose to look at that time as being "in training to go back to school" and lost over 30 lbs (even winning a "Biggest Loser" challenge at work). I also took that time to finish the last course for my double-major and got to walk in the graduation ceremony with my classmates, even if I wasn't actually graduating as a nurse. And on May 11th (one week after receiving my Associate of Sciences degree) I started back into the nursing curriculum. It was intense, but I did it! In fact, I came less than one percentage point from having an A as my final grade (*shakes fist at the universe* SO CLOSE!).

Unfortunately, as the semester progressed weight loss (and anything resembling healthy habits) fell completely off my radar. At first, it was little things - like not taking the time to make salad for the week, or skipping a day at the gym because I had a test the next day. By the end of the semester I was drinking Cherry Coke (not diet even!) as a caffeine fix when studying for tests, and rewarding myself (or comforting myself) with food at every turn. And it's shown up on the scale (and in how I feel, both physically and how I feel about myself).

And I'm done with it.

I have classmates who do things like the Color Me Rad 5K last week, and I want to join in! I'm tired of feeling like a failure, like "yeah, I did a Warrior Dash once too...though you'd never know it to look at me now," when I overhear them planning to participate in such things. It's demoralizing, and just plain stupid - if I did it before, there is NO REASON I can't do it again, I just need to make the decision!

So, I'm making the decision. Dusted off the ol' Spark page today, poked my head in my old BLC team thread (just realized it's not too late to join the next round, so yay!), and got my patootie to the gym for the first time in ages! Feels like a good beginning to me!

So yeah, I'm back. I intend to RAWK this last semester of nursing school, and come out a far healthier and happier nurse than I went in!

Let's do this!

    You can and will do this. I've never been in the nursing program, but I know it is intense (niece is an RN now). Just focus on what you CAN do today to make it happen.

    You are strong! You will succeed!

    I was still raising my family when I was in nursing school. I remember being so tired. Not enough hours in a day.

    This is what helped me.
    I would use every school break to cook double portions for freezer meals for clinical days. Spaghetti sauce and a hamburger based Spanish tomato sauce, chicken casseroles, cooked chicken and ground turkey & bagged it in 3 oz portions. Those school breaks were the only time any deep cleaning got done, too. Make your salads big enough for 4 days at a time. It keeps just that long. Make a box of fresh veggies, carrots, celery, snap peas. Easy to grab for a snack with hummus or to make a sandwich a meal. Pack some salad in single serve boxes for easy to take lunches that only need one of your frozen proteins. Make your own egg McMuffins once a week so you can grab and go when in a rush.
    You can do this. You will love being a nurse.

You were so focused on getting through this semester it totally makes sense that things may have gotten away from you, but I know now that you've passed that hurdle, you'll get back in the saddle.     I found that eating at the hospital cafeteria when I was a nurse, was a pretty healthy meal, but it was smart to stay away from all of the snacks that staff members brought in.

    I have never done a nursing program, though I know friends who did and I know it's a really intense, tough program. I also know how school stress can make it really, really hard to also be healthy at the same time. I did not manage to lose much weight while in grad school--the best I managed was to slow the weight gain down. Even when I was barely able to eat because of stress, I gained weight. But I will say that because I decided in 2004 to be healthier, which I reaffirmed in 2009 and when I joined sparks and again later every time I joined another BLC round, I graduated much *healthier* than I would have if I had not made that commitment--every time I made a healthy choice, whether it was taking time to exercise despite my insane schedule, every time I decided to eat a healthy meal, every time, every time I chose to drink tea instead of a soft drink, I made myself healthier than I would have been.

    You may be more successful than I was in the weight loss department--I wouldn't be surprised, since even on a good day I lose weight so painfully slowly. But regardless of what the scale says, every healthy choice you make COUNTS. It makes a difference.
