Baby Steps to Wellness

Monday, August 17, 2015

Eight weeks ago I had extensive shoulder surgery. I am on a slow but steady path to recovery. I go to physical therapy sessions Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Now I am going to our warm water pool Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday where I can walk laps in the pool and do gentle restorative exercises in the warm water. It is amazing how quickly we lose muscle mass and strength and how long it takes to rebuild those! Now that the weather is cooling off a little, I will begin to walk outside in the mornings. I will begin with just a 5 minute walk with DH by my side. I am going to put my Fitbit back on; it has been on vacation all summer!!
I have tried to eat lots of healthy foods, especially those rich in protein. Most of my day has been spent in the recliner we purchased after my injury. I have gained four pounds since my injury June 5; more troubling is the fact that I have lost a lot of muscle and gained a lot of flab. I have my work cut out for me! I can do this with the help of Spark People.

Yes you can. Just a little bump in the road but you know the way to go so after this injury is healed, you will be right back to it. Get better soon!

Sounds like you have a emoticon plan in place to get you back on track. The most important thing is to allow your body to heal. A diet high in protein should help with that. Take care of yourself!

Boy do I sympathize. I had surgery on my foot on May 1. I am finally starting a bit of exercise -- but I cannot hike as far or as fast; and I cannot lift the same weights. I think I just have to accept that I am at a different point and build slowly and gradually to better fitness.

I gained weight while inactive, and * also am trying to lose it.

You are doing great. The physical therapy is great exercise, and it is great that you are in the pool.

You said it well and have it right, step by step, no hurry to recovery. Sounds familiar, how quickly we can also put weight on and how difficult and tortuous it is to lose it. Seems like a healthy lifestyle is a constant hard work! It is. But I also know how well you can do it!

I think you've done really well to have gained only 4 lbs, Evelyn. It would have been very easy to use your injury as an excuse to eat anything and everything, so congratulations. I know that it will take a lot of work to regain the muscle and strength you lost, but I believe you can and will do it. emoticon

    Enjoy your walks with DH.

You've definitely got this because you have the right attitude!

Keep taking care of yourself. At this point that's the most important. Sending wishes for a quick recovery!
