Obstacle Course Races/Mud Runs

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

So, I've become hooked on OCR's, AKA Mud runs. I did two last year and then signed up for 7 this year!! They were in the perfect order as they went from easiest to hardest.

I just did my first Spartan race and that was a doozie for sure! The others are challenging in that you have to get over 10 ft. walls, cross rings and monkey bars, carry logs, go through ice water (literal ice water...33 degrees with cubes floating), crawl under barbed wire, and so much more. Well, the Spartan does that and incorporates huge strength obstacles as well. The atlas ball is a round cement ball you carry 100 yards or so, do 5 burpees, and carry it back. Then there is a weighted bag (80 lbs maybe?) you hoist up a pully about 50 ft (?...guessing) and lower slowly. The hardest one of all was carrying a bucket filled with gravel that must have weighed around 40 lbs up a long hill that never seemed to end. I thought, finally I'm at the top and downhill will be a piece of cake....I was so wrong. It was loose dirt and steep and I was slipping and sliding the whole way down with my bucket of fun. I stopped every 5 steps and rested it on my leg...another 5 steps...rest. I finally made it. The barbed wire crawl was my favorite. It was very low. i could barely roll under it, but I managed to most of the way. it was on moguls (the course was on a motorcycle track) so up and down. The last down was a kind of long one and you slid like a penguin. So much fun! I was very excited to make it up the warped wall at Rugged Maniac too (1st picture). i tried 3 times at Tough Mudder, but didn't make it. Then, I tried at Rugged Maniac and nailed it with the help of some people up top. The picture isn't me (I didn't have one), but the same wall.

The part I like is it feels like such an accomplishment and I find that I improve each time. i can get over a wall taller than me by myself now. I definitely don't complete all of the obstacles (yet), but i attempt every one and it is an awesome challenge. I'll add a couple of pictures. I don't have many of me (first few) but I'll put a few "canned" pictures in too

Thanks everyone. It was just the most fun ever! Debjae.....you rock! Trifecta! I'm getting mine next year and maybe a hurricane heat too. I have to say that the ice water in TM was the worst.....I'm a big baby about super cold water. I might have cried if my tears weren't frozen inside my face, lol...just kidding. It all makes us tougher though ;) Have an awesome time at the beast! Aroo!!

Yay, yay, yay!!!! OCR's & mudruns are definitely addictive. I've done several, from easy peasy to super difficult (Spartan & Tough Mudder) but I love them all :) Excellent pics! I'm doing all 3 Spartans this year for the Trifecta...I've got one more to go, which is at the end of October (The Beast). I'm so proud of you and anyone who tries these...they are definitely pushing yourself out of your comfort zone for sure. The ice water dunking one, which was about half way through my Tough Mudder, was my favorite and just what I needed to get me through to finish because I was whipped by the time I got to it. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed reading your blog :)
