Today's CBC, and purchase of new computer

Monday, August 10, 2015

It's been a long and tiring day; part of the problem was not enough sleep again last night. Had my weekly CBC done this morning; hemoglobin is still going down, and it only went down to 9.1, so while it's low enough to make me tired, it's not low enough yet to meet the criteria for a blood transfusion. I was not happy that I had my lab work done at 9:30am, yet it took until 6:30pm for my report to be posted online. It use to be, it was only a 2-3 hour wait for most tests to show up online, but ever since the hospital switched to a new computer system almost 6 weeks ago, it seems like everything is just slowed down now, not better.

After I had my lab work done, Penny and I went to Staples and I bought my new computer, a Dell Inspirion (not sure of the spelling) desktop. I decided to stick with a desktop because that is what I've always used and am use too. I like the large monitor I am currently using, especially if I am going to watch a TV show online, and I also use an ergonomic keyboard. I've used the ergonomic keyboard for so long, that if I try to type on regular keyboard, it's like I never learned to type at all. A few years ago when I was in the hospital, my mom brought me her laptop so I could get online, but it was impossible for me to type on that tiny keyboard, so I gave up on it.

The salesman gave me as many deals as he could to bring the price down for me, and another deal I got with it was Kindle HD 6 for $24.99. I'm happy with my current Kindle, but it's 5 years old, so I figured if I could get the Kindle HD that cheap, it wouldn't hurt to have it as kind of a back up too, if my old Kindle ever quits on me. I still have almost 1000 books on the old Kindle, so I will keep using it to read those, but any books I download on the new computer, I will probably put on the new Kindle. I don't have wi-fi, so I have to wait til I am somewhere that has wi-fi available before I can activate the new Kindle.

I won't actually have the computer home until Thursday though; they are getting everything set up for me on it. I have Carbonite to back up my files (documents, pictures, etc. ) and they will start the process of transferring all those to the new computer; when they are ready for that step, they will call me and I will give them the password for my Carbonite. I had Carbonite on a previous computer and it saved all the important stuff for me. It really made transitioning to a new computer much easier.

Yay for the new computer! When I got my new kindle, Amazon had a way I could transfer all of my books from the old one to the new one. You may want to check it out! Hope you get some rest!

    Hi Shari,
How frustrating to wait longer for your results online, particularly when one would reasonably expect a new system to work better. Sorry to hear you had trouble sleeping and are feeling tired on top of it with your haemoglobin down a bit as well. I very much hope you can at least get some restful sleep soon. I'm glad you were able to get a good deal on your computer and Kindle - enjoy using them both when you get them home!
Take care - sending big hugs, love, blessings and prayers your way,

I only use HP products,, many people I know had dell and ended up junking them and getting HP..
I have a large laptop,, I think it has a 21 inch screen,, I know others are using those teensy toy-like notebooks and tablets, but we watch movies, etc on ours, so I got the large one deliberately.. I do not like using teh laptop,,it is slower and the keyboard is not ergonomic. DD uses it almost exclusively. I will take my laptop on vacation to use, but other than that, she uses it most of the time.

I am glad you are going to have your books on your new pc.. How neat!

I ue a big desktop too and am happy with it. The grands watch Netflix on it and it's bigger than the first TV I remember watching. Such progress! I hope everything goes smoothly with the transition and with the files making their trip to the new computer too. Changes never stop do they...

I hope you can stay ahead of your fatigue this week with your lab numbers going down. Sending prayers and positive thoughts!

I hope that you enjoy your new computer. I hope that everything transfers well for you. I have Kindle on my laptop and my books on my Kindle Fire. All of my books are in the cloud now and that keeps my memory available on my Fire.
I just added Windows 10and am struggling to get it figured out. Best wishes for a good week ahead.

I have to agree about typing on a laptop and the size of the screen. I've solved all that though. All it takes is to plug in an ergonomic keyboard and attach the monitor to the laptop. I then run the laptop as dual monitors with the big one being the primary one but then the laptop one to use for more space. It is the best of both worlds for me.

Sorry about your late results. I will pray you feel better and get some good sleep.

    Enjoy your new computer.

I have been using Dell computers for many years and I love them. On my desk top at the moment as it is easier for me too especially with the larger monitor.
Prayers for you and your blood count. Always great to see you sounding so positive!!!
Hope you slept and rested well last night.

I had a Dell laptop that I traveled with for over 4 years and it still works great (almost 10 years old now). Did you know you can usually plug a different keyboard into a laptop? They have a USB connection and you can just plug the keyboard into that and use one you are familiar with.

Yeah! I'm glad you were able to find a computer you think you will like so quickly! It's nice that the people at Staples are helping you with the move to the new computer.

That should be fun and less of a hassle not knowing what is going to work!
I think it's good you got what you are used to...don't need to transition to something...bad enough you have to deal with the new 8.0/8.1...that stuff always made me crazy...they do it with my email, too, and I feel I am going nuts! LOL
Sorry the numbers are not better...will you get the transfusion or wait til next week to see? That waiting on results is so frustrating...we have it, too! But ours takes atleast 24/48 hours!!! Figures a new system would take longer!!! Modern technology at it's finest!
Hope the rest of your week goes well and Thursday you can play with your new "toy" and Kindle!

This is great, I'm so happy for you that you got your new computer and kindle, you will enjoy, I always used a desktop but after it was damaged in the flood I went with a laptop, but I do miss my 22 inch monitor and desktop, I am hooking up my monitor to my old laptop and will use the other one as is...Like you it was a hard transition typing on a small keyboard but it has got easier the past year...I will continue to keep you in prayer for your Blood Levels to come up to more normal levels...Enjoy your new computer and kindle my friend, great blessings for you today! emoticon

I'm sure you'll enjoy your new computer. I have a desktop and a laptop; while the laptop is nice for convenience the desktop is my favourite, for all the reasons you mention. Rest well.

I am glad you got your new computer. I have a nook, but when I updated to my new nook I still have access to all the books I had purchased using my old nook. I would think that would be the case with the kindle.

Shari - I think when you can connect to the internet you can download your books to the new Kindle. They should be in your account in the cloud.

    Congrats on the new computer!
