No More Carrots!

Wednesday, August 05, 2015

I keep going over my limit for vitamin A and the warnings of how toxic that can be are a bit frightening. As far as I can see, we should never have more have half carrot in an entire day! I am shocked by this. I always heard how good they are for you, but I won't be having any more. emoticon emoticon

"High intake of provitamin carotenoids (such as beta carotene) from vegetables and fruits does not cause hypervitaminosis A, as conversion from carotenoids to the active form of vitamin A is regulated by the body to maintain an optimum level of the vitamin. Carotenoids themselves cannot produce toxicity."

You can't get toxic doses from veggies.

Also, the RDA's for vitamins and minerals are figured out to prevent deficiencies, not to drive optimum health. You can and should take in more than the RDA for most things.

Think you should check with the Spark Coaches about this as I've never heard of this problem before & considering the amount of carrots we eat I think we'd have had some of the effects of them by now. I must admit I only check the normal calories, carbs, protein etc

    Vitamin A, IU My Goal – 100-110 Today – 169
Because vitamin A is stored in the body, large quantities can be harmful, causing headaches, dry scaly skin, liver damage, bone and joint pain, vomiting, appetite loss, nerve damage, and birth defects. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for vitamin A is 3,000 mcg for adult males and females.

I know! I have always heard they were good for you, too, but a carrot is listed at 146%. I would love to be mistaken....Am I misreading that then or is it listed incorrectly?

Believe me I would love to be mistaken here, but sparkpeople food search shows a carrot to have over 146%. Is the provided info incorrect?

I just googled vitamin A in the information you have it Is incorrect! Vitamin A is very important for our bodies! You need to Google it and find out the right amount of vitamin A you're supposed to have! You need a lot more than a half of the carrot! Hope you had a wonderful day!
    Hugs and love, xoxo
