How Does the Universe DO This...?

I had the pleasure of hosting my first traveling bicyclist last night, courtesy of www.warmshowers.org
: Jakob has come all the way from SWEDEN to land in New York City with his bicycle & gear and is Indiana-bound for his studies in Engineering Physics.
He called on Monday with plans to arrive on Tuesday evening. We enjoyed a relaxing evening together after he got his "warm shower," did his laundry and sat down to a meal of fresh veggies & cheese, my salsa scramble, and some melon & blueberries later on. It was fascinating to hear about Sweden, Jakob's views on America, which he perceptively viewed as "a country of contrasts." We enjoyed conversation about physics, science, meta-science and of course I had to ask how Sweden fared with it's cycling infrastructure...needless to say quite nicely! He is from Uppsala, where the university was founded in the 1400's...what an amazing time span considering our relatively fledgling America!
Lo and behold as the evening progressed but I discover Jakob is a flautist! Not only does he play flute...but he had it WITH HIM as well! So I brought out my guitar and we joined with each other sharing songs that we know and Jakob played some traditional Swedish folk melodies.
This morning after setting him up with a hearty breakfast and snack for later on the road, I joined with Jakob on a ride out of town, sending him toward our Vestal Rail-Trail www.traillink.com/trail/
which would take him out toward Owego as he is heading for Ithaca tonight and Buffalo afterward.
What a wonderful encounter to which I've been blessed!
A parting pic before we hit the roads together this morning:
Keep the Spark everyone and pay it forward! :-)
