Day 226 - The Bathroom Scale Isn't Your Friend

I am once again getting on my soapbox to talk about why weighing yourself weekly should not be the only measure of your success. That doesn't mean it isn't useful, but it isn't the only metric.

I hit my goal weight on April 30: 173 pounds. Since then, I've dropped another 3 pounds and settled in at 170, with very little change from week two week. So does that mean that nothing is happening?

When I first reached my goal weight, my 34" waist pants fit ok, the 36" were a little baggy, and I couldn't even button a pair of 32"s.

Yesterday I went to Target and bought 2 pairs of jeans (32" waist x 34" length) and 2 pairs of shorts (32" waist) and all of them fit me perfectly. One of the jeans is a little higher waist than I would prefer, but I still like the way I look in them (maybe because they're overdyed black). I'm now wearing most of Steve's pants and shorts, because mine look ridiculous on me, like I should have another person go ahead and join me in them.

I am going to have to clean out my closet and make an assessment of what is left. I do have some pants that still look halfway decent on me, but it makes no sense to keep the baggy pants, and that means some of the 34s are going to go. I think we'll do the same thing with the shirts too - most of the size large shirts are just too darn big. (Remember when you used to bring one of your dad's shirts to elementary school to use as a painting smock? Kinda like that.)

So my body is still adapting and shifting and changing. I lost another inch in my hips last week, an area that I thought would never change. I've always had wide hips and a flat butt. Well, now I have narrower hips and a flat butt! LOL

My weight hasn't changed, but my body has. And that's a VERY GOOD THING!

Don't let the number on the scale be the only focus of your journey. It's just a number.

    Great progress, Steve! I fould things changed for ages after I hit my goal weight - it all depended on what kind of exercise I was doing. Now I kind of rotate and go through phases of say, really wanting to ride my bike or to walk more.
    Get rid of those big clothes and celebrate your bod!

    I totally agree with you! My closet is full of "fat" clothes emoticon and I don't want to buy NEW clothes until I am at my goal... 14 lbs to go! I can do that! I think seeing my FAT clothes hanging in the closet are part of the motivation to emoticon on losing the weight & going to the gym!
    And, to answer your question on my blog yesterday... when I don't go to the gym, I do SOME exercise.... 10 minutes on the stairway in my house two or three times a day, dancing to some music while doing housework... things like that. Thanks for keeping me accountable! emoticon

    So now you have lots of painting shirts!! Start painting!!HAHA!!
    If you have a favorite pair of jeans, wash them in hot water and try them on again..You may be able to keep them,,If not, somebody somewhere needs a pair of trousers or jeans. Happy shopping!!

    I am all about the NSVs...because the scale just move TOO SLOW when you have 20 lbs or less to lose.

    by accident, I have a 2010 calendar under the sink in my bathroom. In 2010, I made a habit of writing down my weight and body fat % when I'd weigh. When 2011 rolled around, I didn't have a new calendar yet. So I just got a pen with a different color ink and continued writing down my weight and body fat. You can REALLY see progress that way. I decided to keep using that calendar, and just change the ink color every year.

    So even when I feel like I'm not making any progress at all, I can see all those weigh ins.

    This is so true. While I am not losing on the scale I do notice changes in my body. My waist like yours is shrinking, and I think I am actually showing guns in my biceps I don't see as much saggy skin as I think I should see and that in itself is encouraging.

    Steve you hit the nail on the head and I hope the others that read this understand the importance of the knowledge you share.

    people get it, and that you were able to buy those jeans and shorts in that new size!

    Well said. I agree, but the scale hasn't been my friend this week. Several reasons such as weather, one "bad" day of eating, age, etc.
