A Happy "Good Morning"

Without opening my eyes I knew it was light, although grey, outside. I heard a very loud purr and a comfortable warmth against my knee. I waited a bit, just enjoying the moment, and then opened my eyes to see my little Stacey, a calico cat adopted a few years ago from the local shelter. I had let her make her own connections with me and was delighted at her new move.
Two days ago she had initiated a new game from the top of my bedside table and when I opened my eyes, I found her alert and staring at me. She then jumped to the table for her “game”. No way was I going to refuse although the wall clock showed 5 AM so the game “played out” until I found myself wanting to sleep more.
By the clock it was 6:45 when I was again awakened by a soft paw patting my face. She had decided it was time for breakfast. I muttered a “No, not yet”, the patting stopped and as I was falling back into sleep, it started again. After two or three tries on her part, I gave in, dished up her favorite wet food and stumbled back to bed. It was Saturday, after all, and the day was all mine.
It was several hours later that I again became aware of that warmth against my knee and a soft, quiet purr. When I opened my eyes and looked down at her, her eyes were closed and I saw what looked like a smile on her face. There surely was on mine. A lovely way to wake up – even if it did start early.
