Missed an appointment today

I missed my appointment I had at the pain clinic this morning, due to another screwup at the Dial a Ride office. I called them yesterday morning, a whole 24 hours before my 11am appointment today, to schedule a pick up time. The dispatcher I spoke to told me they would have a bus at my house around 10am.

So, I set my alarm for 7:30am, to give myself plenty of time to eat breakfast and get myself ready. I went to bed at 9pm last night, and it didn't take me long to fall asleep, but I woke up around 12:30am to use the bathroom, and for some reason, I stayed wide awake for most of the rest of the night, so it was not easy to get up out of bed this morning, with having not enough sleep on top of the cancer-related fatigue I deal with even on the nights I do sleep. I was just looking forward to getting my appointment done with and coming home and taking a nap. Still, I pushed on, and made sure I was ready by 9:30am in case the bus was a little early, as it sometimes is.

I know sometimes during the 1st of the month, they are extra busy, and sometimes the buses are running a little late, but I gave them until 10:30am before I called to see what was going on. I was very upset when I was told I was not put on the schedule when I had called yesterday, and on top of that, the dispatcher I spoke to was kind of rude, and didn't even offer an apology. There was no way I could be sure of getting there on time, so I had to call and reschedule my appointment. The earliest available one was August 11th, so I took that one. Fortunately, today's appointment was just a followup visit to evaluate how my pain meds are working, nothing I needed to be seen urgently for, but it still upset me that I had to cancel it today because of someone else's mistake, especially when I started today not feeling good to begin with.

I still had to call to schedule a ride for my internist appointment tomorrow afternoon, but I had to wait about an hour til I had cooled down some. Fortunately, I got a different dispatcher when I called back, a nice one this time. I was nice about it, but I explained about what happened this morning and why I was upset about it. She understood, and she made sure my pickup for tomorrow was in the computer and on the schedule while she had me on the phone.

The last time they screwed up when I had called for a scheduled pickup was also a pain clinic appointment; that was several months ago. At that time, the mistake they made was putting down the wrong address for my home; they sent the bus to a completely different neighborhood. I still made it to that appointment that day, and they did not charge me for that trip, but I was still a few minutes late getting there that day.

Since it almost seems like I am "cursed" trying to take the bus to my pain clinic appointments, I decided that in the future, I should try to arrange for a friend to take me to those; even if they can't stay and wait with me (the waiting times are often long there), if I can at least get to my appointments on time, I don't mind calling the bus for a ride home. I have a friend already that said she can take me to my August appointment.

    Hi Shari, I am sorry that happened to you. Perhaps this was the way to let your friend take you to future appts. I know all about wanting to be independent, which is all well and good when things go well. But there comes a time when those of us that want to help our friends need to feel needed as well. Nothing makes me feel better than knowing I've been asked by another friend to help them out. It makes me feel that they not only trust me, but want my company as well.

    Dear Shari,
    I am so sorry you didn't have a good night's sleep and then had all this hassle to deal with. It is trying enough when one is well, let alone dealing with health issues. I am glad you had someone cooperative when you rang back. I think it's a wise idea to get a friend to take you to future appointments, and I am praying that this will work out each time for you, and that today's appointment went well...and that you have been able to get some much needed rest too. I had a night without any sleep last night due to pain that would not ease off in bot hip bones so I could not get comfortable. I know how draining it is, especially with fatigue issues involved as well, so I hope you can get some restful sleep.

    So sorry you missed your appointment due to someone else's inability to do their job properly. Hope you are feeling better and getting better rest and sleep.

    I am so sorry you missed your appointment today. I know how frustrating it is having to rely on buses, etc. for transportation. I have not driven very much these last few years. I am so lucky that I have my daughter and son drive me. I am very OCD about my appointments. I always go early. My daughter got that from me.

    Hopefully they won't mess up for you tomorrow. It was good you got a nice dispatcher and she listened when you told her about your concerns.

    I hope you are able to relax tonight and not let this missed appointment bother you.

    You might want to put in a call to the supervisor at the bus service. You can start with really good words for the person who was nice and then mentioned the problem. You never know: if enough people call perhaps the rude person can be retrained. And don't worry about "getting her into trouble" She got herself into her own trouble by her own behavior.

    So sorry that happened. Last year my Mom;'s facility scheduled Dial-A-Ride to get her to a doctor appointment and xrays in the same building across town. I could not take her since she refused to try and help herself getup and out of the wheelchair at that time. They picked her up on time, but as we were riding down the streets, the driver stopped at some woman's house and sat there waiting for her to come out. She had a standing order to get labs drawn at the hospital a few blocks away and he was going to turn into the hospital and wait for her to get it done and bring her back first!!

    I stopped him and told him that he better take mom first across town. HE told me knew his job, yadayada, worked for the company so many years...
    After his condescending tirade, I told him that mom had to get xrays BEFORE her appointment in an hour and he would be paying for the missed appointment with the specialist($250) if she missed it. HE shut up and took us there.

    You must get SO frustrated Shari!! I hope you get a better rest tonight.

    So sorry! We have a saying in our household...Can't anything just ever just be easy??? Glad it all seems to have worked out...but you sure didn't need to be treated hard to say...Oh, I'm sorry! Jeesh!
