What It Takes Is Not Boring at All

Friday, June 19, 2015

Outside of Spark I don't talk much about weight or eating (just cooking, LOL!). Since we are all 'at it,' Spark is a safe place to vent and smile, complain and celebrate this particular road. So much diet talk away from here is about fad diets or how folks 'should diet,' etc. and frankly the subject I spend so much time on here, bores me in casual conversation.

I make exceptions when someone asks me what I do to maintain. I tell them I use the fitness site SparkPeople. I know that doesn't begin to describe all the little things we learn to do over time on Spark to lose and maintain healthy life styles though. Describing all of THAT is a pretty big conversation and I notice folks kind of nod off or say they just wouldn't want to do all of that.

I figure that once I found out what it takes for me to lose and maintain via Spark that's the deal for me. That's what I'm responsible for if I am to be at a healthy weight. So even though it may sound ho hum (track, be active, watch portion size, be consistent....yada, yada, yada) it is simply WHAT IT TAKES.

And when 'what it takes' is harder some days than others I have wonderful Spark friends to look to for support. And when 'what it takes' is working well, I have wonderful Spark friends to say, "Hey, that's great." And when I need inspiration I can come here, look around and find wonderful models of success and struggle. We're sweatin' it together here, and that's grand and not boring at all!

Oh you are SO right. I never talk about weight issues unless I'm here or at a WW meeting. Or with my cousin who goes to the WW meeting with me. and yet - I knew I needed a place where this was the important issue at hand. A place where nobody would give me that glassy eyed stare or start to tell me about hormone injections or magic food.

And like all the continuing education I get at work - I seem to need to hear a lot of this information repeated - with maybe slight alterations - but ... I need to be reminded because it's just so easy to stray into an autopilot way of eating that is designed to get me to buy food I don't need.

Thank YOU for this food for thought!

As you can see, you hit a nerve. So true that there is so much talk out there about diet and what to eat, much of it erroneous.

I liked this and I hope others do too.
Spark was a big help today in not giving in to the candy. I drank water. I waited 20 minutes. I chewed gum. I looked forward to my two o'clock apple. Difficult, but not boring! And I did it! Finally I'm feeling the sense of accomplishment. And I have to credit spark...the motivation and accountability of being able to post my success ( or be consoled and encouraged, if needed).

It's not boring when you're learning something that is important to you! There is a lot to learn and do. I love reading all kinds of different things, just like you said in your blog. It's just not a real priority to those that ask you. They're curious about you, but aren't yet ready to do the work themselves.

I found the same thing. Most people ask me how how I lost the weight and then tune out on how to do it. You are right, Spark provides a source of inspiration on a daily basis. Maintenance is hard work, but is so doable.

That's true about everything, from weight issues to childbirth issues. It's helpful to everyone around us to keep the boring stuff to the people who share the issue.

A very thoughtful blog and I share your experience. Some people only like the idea of healthy eating not the work.

I agree. To try to tell others all the ways spark helps me can overwhelm them, so I keep it really simple. There is a learning curve, and you have to want the help enough to go through it--after 3 years, I'm still learning better ways to let the site help me...but you're right...it's never boring! Have a great weekend, friend!

Yep, absolutely. That's why I'm still active on Spark in my 6th year of maintenance. I always find something to gear me up for the day - an article, a blog or even a recipe. This morning YOU have provided that. Enjoy your day!
