Internist appointment today, and splurge at The Arctic Penguin

Wednesday, June 03, 2015

Penny took me to my internist appointment today. This appointment didn't have anything to do with my recent scans (it was my oncologist that ordered those, and I see him on the 12th); it was a followup appointment having to do with my anemia issues. It went well. He is pleased that overall, my blood counts are not going down as fast as they were before. I still have the standing order from my oncologist to get my CBC checked on Mondays, but the one I had for Thursdays from my internist expired last month, so he wrote me a new one for the next 6 months. He said it's ok if I don't get the Thursday CBC done every week, just when I feel I need it, as I can tell by my symptoms when I might be getting close to needing a transfusion. So, for now, as long as my hemoglobin count stays in the 10-11 range, I'll just go once per week on Mondays for the CBC, but when it get's down to the 9's or below, then I will go twice per week to more closely keep an eye on it.

Today was a bittersweet day; I loved spending some more quality time with Penny, but today is also the day she had to head back home, about 330 miles to Trenary, in the U.P. of Michigan. I will miss her, but I know it's been a long 6 weeks with all the work she has done to get my parent's house ready to sell, and all she has done to help me. I know she misses her cats, her dog, and her husband (and she'd probably tell you in that order too, LOL).

She's taking my sister ( and my sister's cat!) back with her to spend part of the summer; my sister has some intellectual disabilities, so I think this will be good for her. I know that after I am gone too, Penny will be there to look after my sister. Penny already has a room fixed up just for Karen's cat, because Karen was worried that Sophie (her cat) would be too lonely without her.

Before Penny left though, we checked out a new frozen yogurt place that just opened up here in town, a locally owned business called The Arctic Penguin. We haven't had a fro-yo place here in several years, since the local TCBY went out of business. It's one of those self-serve places with the toppings set up buffet style, and you pay by the ounce. I'm afraid I went a little overboard with the toppings, but it's not very often I eat quite that "decadently". I have to admit, it filled me up enough that that ended up being my "lunch" today.

I'm doing good so far on my exercise for this week; I've done my chair workout 3 days in row now! It's been a long time since I've been able to do any type of exercise 3 days in row. I have to take things day by day of course, but I'm going to aim for 5 days in a row this week.

    Dear Shari,
I am so pleased there was positive news from your appointment and you can cut back on your blood tests if your haemoglobin is fairly stable. It was lovely of Penny to go with you, and also to take Karen and Sophie back with her. I can understand it being bittersweet for you. I think the Skype idea is a great one. It's nice to have some fun with food, and I'm glad you enjoyed your frozen yoghurt. Great going with your chair exercise workouts; I hope you feel well enough to reach your goal of 5 days in a row.
    Big hugs,
    Nattacia
