Blog Entry # 19 Diabetes Specialist Apt check up

Tuesday, June 02, 2015

I went to the diabetes specialist/endo yesterday and she said with my last blood work I got done my results were good but my cholesterol was a bit high so. From 2.0 to 2.5 so need to get my cholesterol down. Any suggestions? I am starting to eat more oatmeal and nuts but I am not sure what else I should do or eat to help. I don't eat a lot of fish so I am trying to get more of that in my diet. I don't know if canned tuna or salmon is good and easy for someone like me plus its not as smelly as fresh fish is so. What do you guys think? Or do I start taking a fish oil capsules? As that lowers cholesterol? Keep you all posted. See the specialist in March so. And then I see my diabetes team (diabetes educator and dietitian) in July.

Despite my weight I had the best cholesterol and triglyceride results when I was walking a lot and somewhat following the Mediterranean diet. Mostly I avoided convenience foods (frozen no-salt added veggies are fine), stuck to lower fat meat and poultry (I still do) and ate extra virgin olive oil, first cold press. I used the olive oil combined with various balsamic type vinegar on salads and other vegetables. Olive oil is high calorie so you want to watch how much you use. When my husband was first diagnosed with type II diabetes his doctor recommended the Mediterranean diet. Of course he didn't do it. For one thing back then it seemed too complicated. But I've since found it's not: Whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables, and olive oil instead of other oils. Plus I keep reading vinegar helps regulate insulin levels but I don't know how accurate that is. I'm not so much suggesting you start the Mediterranean diet as I'm suggesting you might do a little research and see if you think it might help.

I agree with you guys and my plan is to get out there and walk atleast 3 times a week and if I don't then I will do the treadmill. So that even means walking to work more as its nice out and summer time. I am also gonna do weight/strrength training also with my weights 2 to 3 times a week.
Now diet wise what do you guys suggest? I don't have the money right now to start taking omega 3 pills but will do so when I get the money But for right now to get more fish in my diet. Especially Salmon as they have more Omega 3 in it. And I want to up my good cholesterol by eating good fats like avocado and olive oil and garlic. I am also incorporating more veggies in my diet which means spinach and tomatoes and garlic :D What do you guys think?

I am off to get my walk in today and get my new Cholesterol Pills and garlic and avacodo and etc. Keep you guys posted.

Also my goal is to get in 5 k a day this month so 3 miles a day :D
And also want to keep my blood sugars in check also. This morning was good 4.7/84.6 but want to keep my blood sugars lower after breakfasts. Last time I saw my diabetes specialist she said I needed to take insulin with breakfast to have better before lunch blood sugars so,

Have a great day everyone :D

I would suggest doing one hour of aerobic exercise at least three times per week and weight training 2-3 times per week. It will lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise your HDL (good) cholesterol. It is certainly worth a try.
