A memory flash -

On a recent TV commercial an old gentleman sings a few bars of “You Are My Sunshine”, a popular song , first recorded in 1939 and declared one of the state songs of Louisiana.

I first heard that song years ago. I was 6 years old – and in love. Gene Autry sang it in 1941 and once I heard him sing it and saw him on his beautiful horse I determined he would just have to wait for me – to get old enough to marry him!
Many nights if there was a film my dad wanted to see, we children were loaded into the back of our station wagon and we went to the local out-door theater. My younger brother and sister , curled in the pillows and little blanket put there for just that purpose, were often asleep before the news reel was over .

But not I. When it was a western, the speaker attached to our car window and the film rolled with music, horses and Gene Autry, I never took my eyes off the screen. I had a good memory and memorized Autry’s songs almost as he sang them. “You Are My Sunshine” was my favorite and my parents patiently, as I’ve been told, just rolled their eyes as I would sing it over and over day and night.

It didn’t help. I didn’t grow up fast enough and he didn’t wait. . “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine “ -

Oh, I loved going to the movies as a child. Family time was always important and it was so much fun, and relatively inexpensive. I remember playing on the swings before the movie started. And we always had to make that trip to the snack shop even if we had just eaten. Thanks for the memories.
