serving sizes

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

I read an article the other day that struck true for me: (paraphrasing) As a society, we no longer eat serving sizes, we eat packages.

And as we all know... packages can have many servings (often bizarre amounts like 2.6 servings per package). I've noticed that on chip consumption in my house - everybody likes a different kind, so everybody was getting their own bag and consuming multiple servings over a weekend. So we've started doing things like buying single serving size bags of chips - which tend to be more expensive, but put a stop to the mindless eating until the package is empty.

I've also started keeping measuring cups as scoops in the bag of trail mix - that 1/4 cup serving is not very big!

What I need to do is spend a couple of days measuring everything to recalibrate my brain. I need to know what a cup of rice looks like... How far up the side of the cereal bowl is 1 1/4 cups... what is the diameter of my apples and the length of my bananas (is that small banana really a small banana when I enter my food for the day)... what does an ounce of cheese look like? Then I can make more accurate estimates of my food intake moving forwards. I used to have a set of nesting bowls with a mid-line and total volume on the side (from 1/4 cup up to 2 cups), but I'm down to just the largest one now - I need to find another set because that made it really easy to be conscious of the quantities I was about to eat.

All things in moderation only works if you have a good understanding of what moderate eating looks like! emoticon
