So what worked?

Tuesday, May 05, 2015

I have been on SP for a long time. I enjoy it and have learned a lot. I also have, somehow, managed to lose some lbs...and am very pleased to have gotten that weight off. BUT people keep asking me "how?" and frankly, I don't know what to say. Before SP, I at one time had approached 250 lbs. From that point I have lost about 95 lbs...but I don't KNOW what worked when or how. The last 25 or so have been on my yrs long journey with SP. I have been thinking about this. What DID work? What did I actually accomplish?

I think it has been one little change at a time. And TIME. I was not in a hurry...and in the beginning, was in much worse health than I knew. After I'd been on SP for a while, I accepted a challenge to walk one mile a day..and it was a challenge! Now I walk 5 miles EVERY day.

I did other challenges and virtual races..but those were not on-going activities.

I made changes in thing at a time. I have nearly totally given up diet soda...and amazingly, I find I don't much like it anymore. I have also cut my use of artificial sweeteners way back. Still use a little...and also use natural organic stevia.
I drink my home made iced tea with lemon...and now also drink a lot of water.
I gave up wheat for a while...and I think that was when the yo-yo dieting finally stopped. Wonder how many lbs total I have lost, counting all the ones I lost multiple times! That is steady now.

I stopped eating commercially produced bread. That was big. Now I make our bread every week...using Einkorn flour, oats, local honey etc. I KNOW what is in our bread...and while I don't eat much bread each day, it is absolutely delicious..and free of all the added stuff.

I gradually increased my walking...and added stairs. ten yrs ago I could barely climb the only did so once a day. Now I have no trouble going up and down. Minimum of ten flights a day. Thanks Fitbit for keeping track!

I did a lot of T-Tapp...and then took up Leslie Sansone walking videos, too. Right now, I am just walking and stair climbing.

Last year, I discovered I needed some new clothing, but didn't realize I was buying the wrong size...too big. Bought more, smaller...and am still dealing with too big. What a shock THAT gets to be!

I still struggle with getting enough of the right foods EVERY day. I am not good at journaling my food either though doing that was a big eye opener. I was shocked!

So...what worked? Lots of little things that all added together have brought ongoing success. Better health is a reward in itself. I feel good. I also am continuing to adjust and change things I can do to help myself, little change at a time. Thanks to SP and all the ongoing support of friends here. I CAN do it. SP works.

You are welcome, Andee...happy something I say is of use to someone else.

I notice in rereading my post I said I had pretty much quit drinking soda...and must qualify that...I haven't used regular soda since the early it is DIET SODA that I have been backing off of. I never drink it at home and only rarely when we are out and about. I know it is really a liquid poison.

I am also not using most of the artificial sweeteners at all any more...and I noticed that the stevia in the baking aisles are blended with I stopped using those, too. Now using liquid stevia drops found in the organic foods dept. I also have on hand the packets of dry organic stevia.

emoticon That's the ticket for me, too. Lots of little changes, tweaking changes as needed and making them a lifestyle habit.

emoticon you're doing emoticon . Thanks for sharing your secrets to success. Do you ever mess up in eating the wrong foods or too much of them? Sometimes I do. It's an on going battle for me. Walking helps a lot and so does swimming. Love both.

Congratulations on your success! I like that you took your time and didn't rush it. It gives you time to make gradual adjustments. Also consistency, you do your walking and stair climbing everyday. That is awesome.

A success story that crept up on you - chuckle. When I first started on sp I read an article here about a woman who walked her way to success. She was large and shrunk and all she did was walk walk walk walk walk . So I think all your stair climbing has a lot to do with it and your daily walking. Congrats!
