How Can I Be Kind to Me Today?

Friday, May 01, 2015

Not many of us would debate the importance of being kind to others. We know it’s a better world and a better day when we are. But how often do we ask ourselves, “How can I be kind to me today?”

When I ask myself that question honestly I find the answer that comes is usually something small and doable. Here are some of my ‘answers’ from this week:

I can sit down and call my friend Karen for a good talk.

I can drink water because I always feel a little more balanced and energetic when I am well hydrated.

I can stop and spend 30 minutes just starting that work project I am avoiding.

I can take the time to stretch now (after a workout).

I can take a few deep breaths while I sit at this intersection (waiting for the longest light in the city to turn green…) and just feel the oxygen flow through me.

I’m curious about what happens when other people ask that question. If you are reading this and are curious too, I’d love to have you ask yourself that and hear your answers!

Love this blog and all the ideas!

    Some of mine:

Sitting in the sun and letting it soak in for a few minutes.
Playing the piano (I did this yesterday for the first time in months...why did I wait so long?)
Closing my eyes and breathing deeply.
    Stretching.
Calling or texting one of my kids.

What a fantastic idea! and I loved everyone's contributions. giving oneself a little kindness is so easy yet so often forgotten. And while I didn't think about this consciously, yesterday I was kind to myself and just sat, in the back yard, with my son, and chatted - for hours, watching the leaves flutter, listening to the birds and bees and letting all the usual Saturday chores go.

    Sigh.

thank you for this great reminder.

Thank you for reminding me to be kind to myself. What a timely blog. My list of 5 ways to be kind to myself this weekend:
    1. leave some things undone and enjoy being out on the lake
    2. drink more water
3 go to the neighborhood derby party - be around people
    4. meditate
    5. do a craft with my daughter

    1. Have an extra cup of coffee in the morning with some extra Spark time.
    2. Enjoy the moment (whatever and wherever it may be).
    3. Get outside for some fresh air.
    4. Work in my flower gardens.
    5. Go for a motorcycle ride.
    6. Spend some time reading a good book.
    7. Go for a walk.

OMG, my list could go on and on. Just writing these things down has put a calmness to the busy day I have ahead of me.

    So true!

Got myself new seat covers for our glider in the back yard.

Assembled the new top and put on the seat cushions.

Sat down and swung a little while.

My answer: I can let myself go to bed and to sleep, with all sorts of things left undone.

A very timely blog! I asked myself that a few times today. What will be, will be so in the mean time, what can I do to take care of myself today?

I got a glass of water because you're right, I always feel better when I drink water. I did a little ujjayi breathing like I learned in yoga to calm things down and I took the dog for a walk because sitting and stewing was not going to help anybody.

    You are always spot on!

It is true that it is easier to do something for someone else. Gave up exercise time yesterday to provide support for DH.
