I'm still trying to get a minimum of 10 minutes of heart raising exercise in per day.
Because I've been using walking poles, trying to keep the walking forms, my shoulders and arms are having discussions with me. They are not liking the poles. I, on the other hand, love the poles.
They are my 30 pounds lost gift to myself.
Anyway, so before I knew I had pneumonia, I walked one mile (almost - .82) using the poles. They are supposed to give you an upper body workout while you walk and use 48% more calories while walking because of the upper body workout. They feel very comfortable walking with them and since I use a cane anyway they make walking much more enjoyable and a lot easier.
So, the next day, or maybe two days later, my arms and shoulders were talking all kinds of trash. I kept saying to myself, what the heck did I do? I don't remember doing any kind of strenuous exercise. Why are my arms, shoulders, etc. sore? Then I remembered the poles. Yes, they work. I feel like I used to feel when I lifted weights. Muscles I forgot. Muscles I didn't know I had. Worthy investment let me tell you.
So, since that day I have still been walking with the poles. I'm doing about a 12 minute mile and it just feels like I'm strolling along. Even this past week with the pneumonia I don't feel strained and out of breath. I plug in my iPod and get going - almost like a meditation.
