How to take compliments?

Monday, April 13, 2015

When you change, people around you cannot but notice the change. And some of them compliment on the change. This is happening more and more often to me in recent times, but since I'm not really used to being complimented on how I look, I never know how to react. You see, I've always been the brainy kid, the funny friend or whatever, but I've never really got compliments on how I looked. It's a totally new thing for me and I can't handle it, it seems. I always say or look like "Who, me?" and smile awkwardly as if I were a silly 12-year-old with self-esteem issues. Well, I'm not 12 (haven't been for decades) but guess I still have to work on those issues, though....

I usually just say thanks and move on to another subject.

Smile and say, thank you for noticing. It's something I have worked hard at getting done. Then if you are uncomfortable, change the subject.

I don't think any of us are comfortable with compliments. We can only smile, say thank you and enjoy the pleasant feeling that comes with it. We are so used to criticism that we expect the negative, not the positive. You worked hard to be who you are today. enjoy the feeling and tell your self you earned it.

I don't take compliments well either, but over time, I've learned that the best response is usually just to simply say thank you.
