Spring has sprung - for a few days

Sunday, April 12, 2015

Busy weekend - mowing the lawn, cleaning out garden beds - still so much dead stuff and weeds coming up to clear out. Filled a 5 gallon bucket 4 times between Saturday & Sunday just with dandelions and ground ivy and other nasty weeds. Two loads of laundry, visiting with my elderly neighbors for a while, cleaning in the house, but not much because I was so busy outside. Back to the office tomorrow.

Can't plant here until Mother's Day to protect plants from our late frosts, but I'm doing a lot of prep work. There's plenty to do and the flipping dandelions are a real pain. The house next door was empty for over 2 years and had skillions of dandelions in the back yard - which spread seeds all over the neighborhood. The house across the corner from me is renters who rarely cut the lawn last summer and had loads of dandelions and thistles. there are new tenants there, but all those dang seeds were already dumped in other yards - like mine. Big deal keeping after them and I don't like using too many chemicals for weed control, so I have work to do. Good exercise and I'll sleep well tonight.

Of course, the weather reports are for possible snow on Wednesday night to Friday, but no big surprise. My tulips are blooming and the lilacs too - and they always get snowed on when they are in bloom. Spring is always very variable weather-wise.

I was reading this thinking your weather is just like mine, and then I realized we live in the same area :) I, too, have lots of dandelions--they seem more prevalent here than in Nebraska where I grew up. Lawns definitely aren't viewed the same in my neighborhood as they are in my parents' neighborhood. I just plated some perennials and I'm waiting a bit to plant the little chard and squash plants I have. I've been keeping them outdoors for the most part, but I bring them inside if it's going to freeze.

I'm going to start a garden this year for the first time. I'm super nervous about it and reading about your day makes me excited to get out there and get mine started :-)

Can't wait to see pics of your garden in full bloom. I know you put a lot of effort into it every year. Hopefully, the snow will push off and bother someone well north of you!
