Does watching food tv make us fat? (NPR)

I thought this was interesting - heard it on NPR yesterday

I've found that if I watch a lot of Food tv (back in the days when I watched tv) it would make me generally want to cook more and eat good things, but not necessarily to make the things they were demonstrating.

    I have the Engine 2 diet book and have been trying recipes from it. It helps me eat more plants and whole grains.

    I really love watching the Chew, but do you really cook like that? I think they fry too much. Plus they really don't spare the salt, bacon, ect.. I do think that I need to throw out most of my cook books because the Chew really does have a lot of good recipes. yet it doesn't make me more hungrier because I can't smell their food. Yet when I watch commercials, I do feel like it affects my eating snacks, and sugars. I think that is because I am not eating righty, and my blood sugar dropped, so I grab for what is easier to eat. it isn't necessarily healthy though. So I try to keep junk out of my house , but I still can blow it. eva

    Oh, HIPPICHICK1, I have to call you out on this one, b/c 1) I lived in New Orleans, 2) LOVE to cook (well, when not on-demand), and 3) have a budding Chef whose first "R" rated movie was "Chef", thanks to my mom ! (who recommended it)

    Yeah, it's not high-quality food, but let's be fair. A beanpole-skinny 13-yr-old can eat anything. (My kids are skinny, my dad is skinny, half my brothers are skinny, NO ONE is obese, DH's side of the family is skinny, etc. I'm the solo fatty in the family. Thanks, GENES. Also, did my mom have an affair? or just stop nursing me too soon? )

    Anyway, as to the OP, I heard it (not in its entirety), and I agree, we focus on food too much. But, to cut to the chase (I'm falling asleep!), different strokes for different folks. I have friends in New England who have happily eaten WHOLE milk, eggs, cheese, fatty meats, etc., their whole lives and they are thriving.

    I let my own kids explore. One is already shrinking away from eating protein (worries me, and one of my best friends said that's how her son became Vegan); the other insists on stopping for a Whataburger en route home from a school event. He is GROWING and STARVING randomly!

    It is hard for ALL of us to strike a healthy balance, and, honestly, I think we need to find what works for each of us. I know I need more protein and fat, and fewer carbs, personally. And greens, lots of greeens..........

    Thanks for the radio reminder, Scooter, b/c I heard it and it had a few things I wanted to check on. AND I can cut and post this on my own blog, but I'm going to be a blog hog tonight and irritate you, because I worked all day. Sorry.

    It might be one of those chicken/egg things. Food TV certainly arose in sync with the obesity epidemic, but did food TV trigger overeating or did a general obsession with food spawn the TV programs?

    I think food TV does an excellent job of pushing for the big sugar industry and unhealthy food in general.

    I think they are right about food programs. The programs usually ONLY have foods that high in calories and easy to make. I think they do it to keep their ratings up but it also keeps our weight up and up. I stopped watching the shows years go but I do have cookbooks! LOL!

    I think that cooking shows can be a trap if we let them. The recipes, as the article states, aren't the healthiest. Some people call cooking shows food porn. I suppose in a way it can be true. I know when I watch them I find them not very appealing. I prefer home renovation shows. JF too since otherwise I'm shouting at the cooking show (and we don't have TV either, but in a hotel we get to watch TV and find ourselves watching about twice a year), "that is just *way* too much fat people!!"

    I watched the movie "Chef" recently and I loved the story but the foods that were featured/eaten, and how they were prepared had me cringing. If you see it watch the grilled cheese scene closely. Three kinds of cheese nearly an inch thick, on white bread, with butter in the pan then more butter on the bread. Oy! When we see that, those of us who know nothing of food maybe think, "Oh yum! I want to try that at home." The movie gives us permission to have that sandwich, just like seeing someone smoking in a movie back in the day when it was hip to smoke encouraged us to smoke...or so say experts, but really I believe in the "permission giving" theory where all destructive behaviour is involved. We are really a lazy lot and terrible at taking responsibility for anything!

    Some of us with more knowledge about food might think that eating an inch think grilled cheese sandwich is going overboard. We might even go as far as knowing how crappy we'd feel after eating so much fat and avoid eating that sandwich and opt for something healthier.

    We never eat watching TV and we never ate in the movies in UK so it is easy for us to just sit and watch and concentrate.
    We must have just got lucky to have that example to follow. Our kids eat anywhere watching TV. but not at our house. We know where the on button is. .

    i like to watch cooking shows and it doesn't make me want to cook the things they make either but it does inspire me to cook. I like to adapt recipes to make them healthier.

    Frenzy. That's what happens when I watch any of them, so I just don't. I love to cook but I love to eat even more. Then when you wave a good recipe at me that is illustrated in living color, and I am seated one room away from the kitchen...

    Just say no or at least change the channel.

    Sometimes it amazes me how suggestible we humans can be. I tend to agree with PATTYCAKE17 that the best thing to do is not watch cooking shows. Don't start if you aren't watching them and stop right away if you are watching them. I don't think they do anything that truly serves you as a person or honestly improves your day or your life.

    Watching TV - like, ANY TV show - makes me want to eat. So, I don't watch TV during the day and I stay pretty busy. But nighttime - YIKES. I want to eat even when I'm watching shows like my 600 pound life.

    Lately I have started working Sudoku puzzles while watching TV at night. Gives me something better to do with my hands and also seems to be improving my mind 'muscles'. emoticon

    Just when you think you can relax and refocus, along comes a commercial that plants an unwanted seed in (sometimes) vulnerable ground. I used to feel the same way when I went to OA years ago, and someone would introduce food subjects into my open mind and it could get very dangerous if I didn't quickly dispel those thoughts. As for food TV, I just don't watch it anymore. Who wants to watch an overweight Guy with hamburger juice running down his little white goatee? emoticon

    I know one thing for sure. Watching "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" in HD sure as heck makes me hungry, even if I wasn't before!
